Description	:	George J. Gillan was born September 22, 1859, at Carninney, County Antrim, Ireland. He came to America in June, 1873, and settled with his parents in the McClaine County, Illinois, where he resided til February, 1885, when he came to Nebraska, locating in York County. March 15, 1886, he was united in marriage to Annie Gillan. Their first home was on a farm where Cordova is now located. He resided in Seward County til 1894, when, with the family, he moved to York County, where he resided till 1910, when he moved to his late home... Read More	George J. Gillan was born September 22, 1859, at Carninney, County Antrim, Ireland. He came to America in June, 1873, and settled with his parents in the McClaine County, Illinois, where he resided til February, 1885, when he came to Nebraska, locating in York County. March 15, 1886, he was united in marriage to Annie Gillan. Their first home was on a farm where Cordova is now located. He resided in Seward County til 1894, when, with the family, he moved to York County, where he resided till 1910, when he moved to his late home in Exeter, where he departed this life May 13, 1940, at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 22 days. In 1907 Mr. Gillan united with the Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church, later transferring his membership to the Exeter Methodist Church of which he was a loyal and faithful member. Mr. Gillan was of kind and cheerful disposition. True to his nationality, he possessed a vein of cheerful humor. He was successful in business. He enjoyed a wide acquaintance and had many friends. He was himself a considerate friend. In 1908 he lost his sight. Notwithstanding his misfortune, he was of good cheer in a pronounced degree. He was a Christian optimist, and he bore the latter months of severe suffering with great patience. In 1936 Mr. and Mrs. Gillan observed with pleasure the fiftieth anniversary of their wedded life in the presence of their relatives and friends. His understanding of and interest in people and the welfare of the community made his life a blessing and inspiration to all who knew him. He was the oldest of a family of thirteen children. He is survived by his wife, Annie; three daughters, Miss Luella at home, Mrs. Mary Kleinschrodt and Mrs. Edna Songster of Exeter; three grandchildren, Mrs. Phyllis Peterson and Billy and Marjorie Songster; two great-grandchildren, Don and Donna Mae Petersen; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Chambers of Exeter and Mrs. Mattie Chambers of York; five brothers, Samuel W. of York, James L, Thomas J. and Harry V. of Exeter and Edward S. of Oak. A daughter, Jennie, preceded him in death December 23, 1931. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Beechner at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon. Burial was in the Exeter Cemetery.
