Description	:	Mary Gillan, daughter of Alexander and Jennie Gillian was born December 23, 1860, in Cornnie, County Antrim, Ireland. She passed away at her home in Exeter, Saturday, May 22, 1948, at the age of 87 years 4 months and 29 days. The call of the new land came when Mary was twelve years old. The family left Ireland May 24, 1873, and crossed the Atlantic. They settled in McLean county, Illinois, where they resided until November 1883, when they came to Nebraska, locating north of Exeter in York county. Here the deceased grew to womanhood. Mary Gillan knew the hazards of prairie fires, the scourge of grasshoppers, the big blizzard of 1888, and all the hardships in growing up with any new country, and especially in the days when there were no modern conveniences. These pioneers had the wisdom and strength of their own brain and hand, along with their faith in God, to carry them over the many discouraging and dark hours that were theirs. February 17, 1887, she united in marriage with John Franklin Chambers. To this union were born four children, all of whom survive. Mr. Chambers passed away December 28, 1942. In November, 1904, the family moved from their farm home to Exeter. Soon thereafter, Mrs. Chambers united with the Methodist Church. She gave her love and devotion to her Lord and her service to her church. She was ever found in its services until failing health made it impossible for her to attend. Her complaint was that she could not go as she would like. She missed its inspiration, its fellowship and its opportunity to serve her Lord and His children. She was never given to self-pity, rather she loved to joke and to think of others. It was a pleasure to visit with her and to be in her company. Her faith in God sustained her throughout her life. Surviving are her four children, Nina of Exeter, Elza R. of McCool, Ralph L. of Los Angeles and Monte F. of Denver; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry V. of Exeter and Edward S. of Oak; a number of other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. L. A. Fishel. The singers were T. D. Clarke, J. D. Rogers, Mrs. Mabel Manning and Mrs. Herbert Howarth, accompanied by Mrs. Clarke. Pallbearers were five nephews, Earl Miller, Earl Kenneth, Henry and Olin Gillan and Glen Lewis. Burial was in the Exeter Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal May 1948
