Description	:	Thomas Johnston Gillan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Gillan, was born at Colfax, Ill., February 20, 1876, and passed away September 25, 1945, at his home north of Exeter, at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 5 days. Read More	Thomas Johnston Gillan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Gillan, was born at Colfax, Ill., February 20, 1876, and passed away September 25, 1945, at his home north of Exeter, at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 5 days. Mr. Gillan's parents had come from Ireland not long before his birth. The section of Illinois where they first settled was at that time not well developed, having some of the pioneer characteristics which prevailed at a later date in regions farther west, and the Gillan home was established in a log cabin where Mr. Gillan was born. In 1883 when Mr. Gillan was seven years of age the family came to Nebraska, stopping first at Friend and then located on a farm in the edge of York county, in the same section where Mr. Gillan made his home for the remaining 62 years of his life. Mr. Gillan recalled his experience as a child of 12 in the great storm which swept Nebraska in 1888. Caught in this storm on their way home from school, he and a number of other small children stopped at a neighbor's house for the night. This farm was later to be the place where Mr. Gillan took his bride to set up housekeeping and where they spent their entire married life. On February 18, 1903, Mr. Gillan was married to Bertha Marie Lull. They were the parents of four children--Ethel at home, Mrs. viola Ziegler of Friend; and Earl and Kenneth of near Exeter. There are also five grandchildren; four brothers, Samuel of York, James and Harry of Exeter and Edward of Oak; one sister, Mrs. Frank Chambers of Exeter; as well as a number of nieces and nephews; other relatives and a great many friends. Mrs. Gillan passed away September 14, 1939. In the passing of Thomas J. Gillan, this community mourns the passing of an upright citizen, a man known and respected by all who have lived here for any length of time. His contribution was made as a successful and progressive farmer and as the head of a Christian home where four children grew to maturity and are now taking their places in wholesome community life. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, September 27, in the Exeter Methodist Church of which Mr. Gillan was a faithful member for many years, serving for a long period on the official board. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. L. A. Fishel. Burial was in the Exeter Cemetery. The Fillmore County News, published in Exeter, Nebraska on Thursday, October 4, 1945 page 1.
