Lead Daily Call, Friday, October 24, 1919, page 5: GEORGE KORAB KILLS HIMSELF Despondent, He Committed Suicide at His House on Little Spearfish Word was received from Savoy by Coroner Hodges yesterday evening that George Korab, who has a ranch on the head of the Little Spearfish, where he had been conducting a sawmill, had shot and killed himself. The coroner and J.J. Mead immediately left for the scene of the suicide, and after a hard drive reached the home of the Korabs which is about eight miles above Savoy. After their arrival there it was learned that the act had been committed about noon yesterday and came with a suddenness that surprised and shocked the members of his family and his friends. Korab had been despondent for several days over some matters which had been giving him considerable worry, but it was not believed his troubles, which would have passed, would result in his taking his own life, and his wife and the other members of the family did not pay much attention to or watch him closely, although they saw he was not in his usual happy frame of mind. While his wife was out in the yard feeding the chickens, and two of his stepchildren were but a few feet from him, he entered his room and taking a 30.30 rifle, loaded it, placed the butt against the wall of the room and the muzzle of the gun just above his nose and fired it with the aid of a stick to pull the trigger. Death must have been instantaneous, for the entire top of his head above the eyes was blown away. Although there were three persons within less than fifty feet of Korab when he fired the fatal shot, none of them heard the explosion, and it was not until Mrs. Korab had occasion to enter their room that his body was found and his suicide known. Mrs. Korab was prostrated by her gruesome discovery of the mutilated body of her husband, and it was some minutes before she could give the alarm. The coroner was notified, and as stated, with Undertaker Mead and James Hamill went to the scene of the suicide and brought the body to Lead, where an inquest will be held. Korab had in his employ, a number of men cutting timber and working his sawmill, and was believed to be in pretty good circumstances. He was in the city last Tuesday transacting business, and at that time appeared to the friends he met to be in good spirits. He is an old resident of the Hills and for many years has resided on the farm which he owned at the head of the Little Spearfish. He was a man about 61 years of age, well liked and respected by many friends in this section of the country which will learn of the suicide with sincere regret. He leaves a wife and several stepchildren to mourn for him, and they will have with them in their sorrow the sympathy of numerous friends. Lead Daily Call, October 27, 1919: Funeral services for the late Geo. Korab took place this afternoon from the undertaking parlors of J.J. Mead, and were attended by many of the friends of the family. Rev. Wilcox of the Methodist church officiated. Interment was in the municipal cemetery in South Lead. South Dakota Marriage Records 1905 - 1949 note that George Korab of Spearfish, age 52, and Mabel Spink of Spearfish, age 47 and divorced, were married in Deadwood, Lawrence County, South Dakota on June 18, 1906 by Neil McDonough, Justice.
