Description	:	George Levi Jones of Phoenix, Az, formerly of Route #7, Ottumwa, Iowa, passes away July 2 2000. He was born August 6 1912, At Hedrik, Iowa, to James William Jones and Artie Arzella Dawson Jones. He was united in marriage to Virginia Fuller of Ottumwa on September 23 1932 at Lancaster Missouri. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1929. He farmed near Highland Center until he retired in March of 1987. Read More	George Levi Jones of Phoenix, Az, formerly of Route #7, Ottumwa, Iowa, passes away July 2 2000. He was born August 6 1912, At Hedrik, Iowa, to James William Jones and Artie Arzella Dawson Jones. He was united in marriage to Virginia Fuller of Ottumwa on September 23 1932 at Lancaster Missouri. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1929. He farmed near Highland Center until he retired in March of 1987. He was secretary of Hopewell School District of Wapello County for ten years and was a past trustee of Highland Township. He as a memeber of the Hedrick United Methodist Church, Hedrick Lions Club and Wapello County Farm Bureau. George was a farmer all his life. He began as a small boy helping to work his father's farm and didn't retire until he was 75 years of age. It was his work; it also served as a venue for his hobbies and recreation. Some of you may have tasted honey from his beehives. Some of you may have helped him harvest a bee tree, or fished with him in Cedar Creek, or hunted deer or pheasant on his place. He was and environmentalist. He believed in and practiced soil conservation and wild like conservation. It was his stated purpose to leave the farm he worked in better shape than he found it. He terraced and tiled fields; he rotated the crops on a strict schedule; he left the waterways in grass to save the soil and protect the wild like that would find refuge there. George was a pioneer in the early 50's in the usage of pit silage and automation of cattle feeding. He received the Wapello District Soil Conservation Award presented by the Des Moines Register and Tribune and Iowa Farm and Home Register in 1954. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister and his wife, Virginia, who died on April 20 1974. He is survived by his three daughters; Betty Sears, Thelma Harris and Ann Collier; four grandchildren and nine great grand children, and two sisters, Icil Parks and Nancy Bissell.
