Born May 7, 1909, to John Morgan Wilson and Mary Newton Wilson, George spent his early years at the family ranch in Indian Dan Canyon. With several of his ten siblings, he first attended a country school, transferring to the Brewster school when the family moved into town. George finished high school at Hay, Washington, in the Palouse country. In the summer of 1932, George married his childhood sweetheart, Janice McCoy, at Palmer Lake. First living at Brittain Flat near Tonasket, George and Jan moved to Brewster in 1934. There they settled upon the banks of the Columbia River and began a life-long project of making the desert bloom. Over time, sand and weeds yielded to grass and gorgeous flowers that lifted the hearts of all who passed. During his first years in Brewster, George was a gas distributor for Gilmore Oil Company. Then, in the 1940s and 1950s, he worked as a range inspector for the Washington Department of Public Lands and as a right-of-way inspector for the Washington Department of Highways. He worked as well for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. From such beginnings George developed a long and satisfying career as a real estate appraiser, negotiator and expert witness. Those were great years for him, and his work took him throughout the state of Washington and, on occasion, to other states as well. It was in Wyoming, for example, that George got to fly very close to a large herd of antelope while on an aerial tour of some range land he was valuing. As exciting as such events were, however, they were but icing on the cake of a profession that provided him with so much stimulation and so many encounters with interesting and remarkable people. For many years, George and Jan also operated a cattle ranch up on Harmony Heights and the "Pulsipher Place." Early on they were joined in that endeavor by their son, Mac, and in later years, by a nephew, Jack Shaw. The ranch, a showpiece of soil conservation and water development techniques, was a source of great fun and satisfaction to the entire family. In the fifties and sixties, George became very active in Democratic politics, serving for several years as the Okanogan County Democratic chairperson and also for a time as Fifth District chair. In the early sixties, his was among the first voices raised against an attempt to falsely discredit a regional legislator and his wife. George's vocal and forthright stand at a time when some remained silent captured perfectly one facet of his character. He was telegenic, too, as a film crew from KING television discovered. "Suspect," a documentary the station created at the time from interviews with George and others, received an Emmy nomination that year. Although perhaps not always describable as an "easy" person, George had a wide streak of generosity and helped many people both financially and with thoughtful counsel. He had a real soft spot for ambition, and many hard workers received a discreet boost from George Wilson. True to a family tradition learned in childhood, George tried to leave his world better than he found it. Those he helped in various ways over the years know this already. Those who in recent years have driven by the flowers at Brewster's southern entrance will have discovered it for themselves. George leaves behind his wife, Jan; a son and daughter-in-law, Mac and Alice Wilson of Tonasket; a daughter and son-in-law, (Mary) Lynda and Dan Edwards of Bellingham; three grandchildren and a grandson-in-law: Orin Wilson of Vancouver, Washington; George Wilson of Brewster; and Stacey and Greg Romaniuk of Snohomish. He leaves as well two sisters: Ruth Peffley and June Jenson, both of Wenatchee; honorary kin Maurice and Katherine Schueler of Mercer Island; and many nieces and nephews. He will also be particularly missed by his long-time friend and landscaping colleague, Ron Gaines, and by his Lindsey's breakfast buddies. A memorial service for George will be held at Barnes Chapel in Brewster on Friday, May 20, 2005, at 11 a.m. Afterward, George's friends and well-wishers are invited to gather at the Brewster Grange Hall to celebrate his 96 years as a "stand-up guy."
