Obit: Wall Lake Blade, April 26, 1923: After an illness of about two weeks George Mauer, a Wall Lake businessman and well-known farmer, passed from this life at his home Friday morning. George Mauer was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Mauer of our city. He was born near Franklin Grove, Illinois, 47 years ago. He came with his parents to Sac County in the year 1883. He received his education in our rural schools and in the year 1898 was married to Miss Gertrude Hovenden. To this union five children were born, two of whom died in infancy. In 1910 he bought a splendid farm located about two miles north of town and has improved it greatly during his ownership. About four years ago he became a half-owner with William Wollesen, a boyhood friend, in our city meat market, and this firm have also been extensive livestock buyers and shippers. Mr. Mauer was also associated with others in extensive land holdings. Deceased was a member of Lake Lodge, A.F. and A.M. of Wall Lake and the Eastern Star Chapter, as well as a member of the Commandery at Sac City. The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon and were largely attended. Lake Lodge had charge of the services. First a brief service was conducted at the late home and the Knights Templars of Rose Croix Commandery acted as escort as the funeral cortege moved from the home to the church in town. Rev. Carnahan, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, preached the funeral sermon and after this many friends in autos and members of the Masonic order accompanied the remains to the place of interment and committed them to the grave with solemn ceremonies. At the grave C. Tredway, worshipful master of Lake Lodge, read the beautiful and impressive Masonic burial services. The funeral grand honors were given at the grave by the assembled Masons and the body was consigned to the earth from whence it came, and his spirit commended to God who gave it. The closing prayer and benediction were by Rev. Carnahan. A lamb-skin or white leather apron, an emblem of innocence and the badge of a Mason, was placed in the grave of the deceased brother Mason. Many floral tributes were sent by sorrowing friends, and the casket was covered and banked with these beautiful emblems of sympathy and friendship. Deceased is survived by his wife, three sons: George, Leonard and Richard; aged parents, two brothers, Charley and Ed - Fred, a younger brother, was killed in an accident 13 years ago; three sisters, Mrs. Dell Spade and Mrs. Ezra Bitner of South Dakota; Mrs. Elmer Fawcett of Auburn.
