Their children: Edward Mauer (1870-1940); Charles Mauer (1873-1952); George Mauer (1876-1923); Elizabeth "Lizzie" Mauer (Mrs. Geo. Elmer) Fawcett (1878-1943); Louise Mauer (Mrs. Ezra) Bittner; Anna Mauer (Mrs. James) Spade; Fred Mauer (1883-1904). Obit: On May 17, 1921, John Mauer had a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered. On August 17, 1923, he suffered another stroke, from which he lingered three weeks, dying on Friday evening, September 7, 1923, at the advanced age of 76 years, 5 months and 1 day. John Mauer was born in Germany May 6, 1847. He came to this country when 18 years of age and first settled in Dixon, Illinois. After working on a farm for a few years he returned to Germany for a visit with his relatives and friends, remaining there about six months. He returned to Illinois and again took up farm work. On September 25, 1869, he was married to Miss Martha Meister. To this union were born three girls and four boys. He is survived by his wife and five children; Charles of Wall Lake; Edward of Sac City; Elizabeth Faucett of Auburn; Louisa Bittner of Winner, South Dakota; Anna Spade of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 18 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Two sons preceded him in death, Fred in 1904 and George April 20, 1923. After farming ten years in Illinois the family came to Iowa, first working on the farm of Henry Reinhart and later buying a farm in Clinton Township upon which the deceased and his family lived for 15 years. Mr. and Mrs. Mauer retired from active work on the farm and moved to Wall Lake in the fall of 1904. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. Carnahan, officiating. Interment was made in the Wall Lake Cemetery. At the cemetery the Masonic Lodge of Wall Lake, which he was a member, conducted their burial service.
