George Rubush was born in Augusta county, Virginia, April 28, 1820 and passed to receive the reward for a well spent life, May 30, 1909, at the ripe old age of 89 years, one month and two days. His boyhood and young manhood days were spent in the "Old Dominion"and while Virginia has sent forth into the world many famous and illustrious citizens, never has she sent out a son with a purer heart, than George Rubush. His life was modest and unassuming, but full of kindly deeds quietly performed. He was married in Virginia on August 10, 1851 to the faithful companion who survives him and to them came eleven children, eight of who are still living, They being: Joseph of Indianapolis, Ind; Mark and Ozro, of Jackson; Grant of Bisbee, Arizona; C.O., of Tipton; Mrs. Chas Badgley and Mrs. J. Adams of Tipton and Mrs. H.E. Westfall of Sharpsville. When a youth of eighteen years he became a member of the United Brethren church in Augusta county, VA, and to this denomination he remained loyal and faithful to the close of his life. On removing to Indiana in 1868, and finding no church of his choice near his home, he attended the various other denominations, worshiping with them and giving liberally as his means allowed to their support. His increasing feebleness of health had lately prevented his attendance on the divine service, but his faith In a personal savior, a living, loving redeemer never faltered. His hope grew brighter as he neared the shining shore, and in his last moments a beautiful vision was granted him. The mists of earth were clearing away, the gates of heaven were opening, and he caught a glimpse of the loved ones who were waiting ot give him a joyous welcome. With a smile of recognition, he called their names, and as the morning sun rose to greet the new day on earth, the pearly gates swung wide, and he entered in, free forever of care and pain. Additional biographical information: Sometime between 1857 and 1860 George moved his family to Greene County, Tennessee. The 1860 census record show that his son John P.L. Rubush had been born in Tennessee only 6 months prior to the record being taken. On the census George reported his Occupation to be Farmer and that his property was valued at $500. In 1870 George and his family were living in Morgan County, Indiana, at the city of Martinsville. His half brother William G. Rubush and his young family lived two doors down. At this time George lists his occupation as teamster while his half brother William was working in a Shingle Mill along with his nephews, Joseph 17, William 15 & Markwood 13. George's nephew, Preston C. Rubush, (William's son) would grow up to become an accomplished architect and established the architectural firm Rubush and Hunter, which was responsible for designing and building many famous landmarks still standing in downtown Indianapolis today.
