McCranie; aged one year, seven months and twenty-three days. "Ah! It is sad when one thus link'd departs!" Nature had fashioned this precious little boy with a skill that, to a parent's eye, approximated to perfection. Even though in his infancy-a mere prattler, as yet unschooled in "the sweet music of speech"-she had stamped the indelible impression of manliness upon his high pale brow, increasing the effect by the mild, steady lustre of his beautiful blue eyes that could express sorrow or gladness, hope or disappointment with remarkable power. And he seemed born to win friends, to please, to smile and yet-to suffer. His little life was all storm and struggle. Red-handed war welcomed him to his little cradle, and ere dove eyed peace had smiled upon our distracted country, disease began its insidious approaches against which the patient sufferer struggled with an effort at mirth even while death, "like an untimely frost," was gathering upon his manly little face. And Death with relentless hand, deaf to entreaty and oblivious to the tender ties of nature, tore him from us. Still, the victory is not the Destroyer's, for whilst entreaty could never prevail with his "dull, cold ear," and whilst he robbed us of a solice and comfort here upon earth the few years we may live, nevertheless he could not defraud Heaven of its own, nor destroy that immortal spark which most we cherished. Upon that a father's hopes were reared, and it is that, God be praised! Which survives the ponderous blows of Death, who the while was killing only "to make alive." Hence, we murmur not-and mourn not, only that poor weak and wounded human nature may find a balm for its affliction. Strong and yet unshaken; firm as the everlasting hills against which storm and change prevail not, and bright as the silvery sheen of the firmament is our belief that "HE DOETH ALL THINGS WELL."
