Description	:	Son of Malcolm McCranie [Jackson Parish State Legislator] and Mary Walton, born at Centerville, MS. Married Charlotte A. Ashley on June 1, 1859 and had the following children: Malcolm A., George W., Percy W., Donald, J. Daniel; Olive and Mary. He joined Company K of the 9th LA Infantry when the Civil War broke out. He was also elected Mayor of Monroe on May 9, 1866. He served until April, 1868. George was elected to be the 5th Congressional District Representative to Congress, but was not allowed to be seated because he hadn't taken the oath of allegiance. The Opelousas courier., April 20, 1895, Page 1 Geo. W. McCranie Capt. Geo. W. McCranie, a great Louisiana journalist of the reconstruction era, died in Monroe on April 8, in the 58th year of his age. When Capt. McCranie doffed his gray jacket in 1865 he established the Ouachita Telegraph, and during nearly two decades that it remained under his control the paper was a leading political factor in North Louisiana, while its fervent appeals again and again aroused the dormant energies of the people in every section of the State and powerfully assisted in marshaling them anew, and in spite of repeated defeats, against their oppressors, who by the aid of returning boards held the commonwealth in their vice-like grip while they despoiled it. He was one of the founders of the Louisiana Press Association, which was organized at Baton Rouge in 1880, and was its first President. Despite the clouds which hung over his later years, the people of Louisiana owe it to him and to themselves to erect over his remains a monument bearing the figures 1865-1876, the dates of Louisiana's hideous enslavement and of her glorious redemption ; and when the newspaper men of the State meet at Donaldsonville they should take steps to thus honor the memory of one of the ablest and purest members of their guild, who with pen and sword labored valiantly and unselfishly for his State and people.
