Read More	PROMINENT CITIZEN DEAD After an illness covering more than a year, George Stephen McCready, one of Crisfield's oldest and most prominent citizens died at his home in this city last Monday night. Thus again has the grim reaper claimed as its tribute one of Crisfield's foremost citizens, whose death, though not unexpected, came as a shock to a large circle of friends. Capt. Stephen McCready, as he was familiarly known to the residents of Somerset county, was born in what is now Lawson's district, just on the edge of Crisfield, on Nov. 14th, 1837, and was the son of the late Benjamin McCready. In early life he engaged in the vessel business, and afterward was interested extensively in the oyster planting business in North river, Va. Later he returned to Crisfield and established the Marine Railway business of Nelson & McCready, with which he was actively connected for several years and until his retirement from active business a few years ago. Mr. McCready was a pioneer in the business life of Crisfield, and always saw the brightest prospects for the future of the town. He was well-known in the business circles of the county and took a keen interest in different industries with which he was connected. Mr. McCready was recognized as a man of fine business judgement, and was a Director in the Bank of Crisfield and the Crisfield Ice and Electric Company, two of Crisfield's leading institutions, at the time of his death. He also served as a member of the City Council for several years and was ever in the foremost ranks when the best interests of his town could be served. The deceased was an active member of Mt. Pleasant M. P. church, in fact was one of its founders, and he lived to see the church of which he was fond grow and become one of the largest and best in the Maryland Conference. He lived his christianity in his daily life, and his rugged honesty and sterling integrity endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. Mr. McCready was married three times, his first wife being Miss Lovey Ward; his second wife being Miss Sidonia Somers, daughter of the late John Somers; and his widow who survives him being, before marriage, Miss Susie Atkinson, sister of Dr. Gordon T. Atkinson of this city. He is survived by three sons: Edward and Ira, of the McCready Cork Co., Chicago, and Robert McCready, Commonwealth Attorney of Lancaster county, Virginia. Mr. McCready also leaves one brother, Capt. Robert McCready, aged 80 years; and three sisters: Mrs. Charlotte Somers, aged 91 years; Mrs. Mary Nelson, aged 85 years, of Crisfield; and Mrs. Emeline Conner of Chicago, aged 75 years. Funeral services over the remains were held at his late home Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. Frank T. Benson, pastor of Mt. Pleasant M. P. church, assisted by Rev. J. Vernon Ashworth, the rector of St. John's church. Hundreds of friends gathered there to pay their last tribute of love and respect to the dead. Interment was in the St. Peter's cemetery.
