Sunday, March 30, 1884, The Cincinnati Commercial Tribune, pg4 - "Association Formed at Fostoria" Fostoria, March 29, a baseball organization has been organized here for the purposes of organizing and equipping a baseball team to compete for honors. The officers of the association are as follows, President, W.J. Wagner, Vice-president D.P. Lloyd. Secretary A.E. Merganthaler, Treasurer G. Morgan, Manager, George Boley. About $300. 00 worth of stock was subscribed in a few minutes after the organization. the management desires to have about $700.00 in the treasury before any steps are taken towards organizing a team. Lindsey, secretary, and Boley, Hale, and McLaughlin, trustees He was the Marshall of Fostoria 1891-1892 and 1903-1904. He also served as Chief of the Fire Dept., a policeman, and the first captain of the Police Dept. under civil service. He was a painter by trade. George Boley killed himself in his hotel room in Toledo at the Schuchman Hotel. He was in Toledo conducting an investigation into the Coe Murder (Possibly Charles H. Coe who died in Fostoria, Feb 27, 1910, from a fractured skull) - (George's wife Ida was dying of breast cancer) Account of Death - "Suicide in Toledo Sunday Morning" - "George W. Boley, former Fire Chief, City Marshal, and Police Captain" - "Despondency Probable Cause" - "Purpose of visit, said to be work on the Coe murder, body brought home" Relatives received a message from Toledo, Sunday afternoon to the effect that George W. Boley, of this city, has been found dead in his room in the Shuchman, having ended his life with a bullet. The fact that the dead man still retained his grasp on the revolver caused some suspicion that it might not have been suicide: that the gun might have been so, placed to give this appearance and the coroner refused to allow the body to be bought home until late last night, while an investigation was made along this line. It was released during the night and was brought here on the Hocking Valley at four a.m. and taken to Asire's and this morning was removed to the residence on East South Street, where the funeral will be held tomorrow at three o'clock conducted by Dr. J. F. Olive and will be private. The remains may be viewed from nine to eleven tomorrow. Mr. Boley was formerly chief of the department, later a policeman, city marshal, and the first captain under the reorganization under the new code was greatly interested in the Coe murder case and had been working on a theory which he believed would result in the apprehension of the murderer and this is the business which took him from the city, it is said. He was in Detriot on Thursday and returned to Toledo Friday, going to the Schuchman hotel, he and Mr. Schuchman being old friends, he having been in the employ of the later at one time. He has been in ill health for some time suffering from lumbago. While in the hotel he avoided Schuchman, keeping to his room much of the time. The Toledo Blade tells of the Suicide as follows: With blood oozing from a bullet wound in his left temple and a 32 caliber revolver, with one chamber empty, clutched in his left hand, George W. Boley, fifty, a painter of Fostoria, Oh., and formerly Chief of Police of that city, was found about 1:30 Sunday afternoon, lying dead in bed in his room at the Schuchman hotel, 707-709 Summit street. Coroner Charles J. Henzler rendered a verdict of suicide and authorized the removal of the body to the undertaking rooms of D.J. Murphy and Son. Boley registered at the hotel late Thursday afternoon and according to George Schuchman, proprietor of the hotel who had known Boley for nearly twenty years, the latter looked haggard and appeared to be run down physically. Schuchman said that Boley remained in his room most of the time during his stay at the hotel and told the proprietor that he did not wish to be disturbed, saying that he would ring the bell if he desired anything. Shortly after five Sunday morning Boley went to the hotel office and remarked to Julius Herman, the night clerk, that he was not feeling well. he went into the barroom and took a drink of whiskey and then after procuring a pitcher of ice water, he returned to his room. When the chambermaid knocked on Boley's door, late in the forenoon she found the door locked on the inside and was unable to gain any response to her summons. After dinner, she made another vain effort to gain entrance to the room and then notified the proprietor. Schuchman summoned the police and detective Edward Rock forced open the door and found Boley lying dead in bed, clad in his underclothes. the condition of the body indicated that the man had been dead for six or seven hours. W. R. Brown, a Molder, who occupied a room on the second floor of the hotel, said he heard a pistol shot about six Sunday morning, but thinking the shot was fired in the yard back of the hotel he paid no attention to it. That Boley was reduced in Finances was indicated by the fact that in his pocketbook was found a pawn ticket which showed that Boley had pledged a watch Thursday with a Summit street pawnbroker for $5.
