Read More	Obituary: Geo. W. Drake, one of the oldest residents of Jackson county, died at his home five miles east of Holton on Sunday, July 16, 1899. George W. Drake was born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1834. For a while he taught school, among his pupils being the Parrott girls, whom he afterwards met in Kansas and eventually married one. He studied law and graduated in his profession, but being attracted to the vast new country in the west, in the early 1850s he went to Texas, Arizona, Old Mexico and California before coming to Kansas traveling the entire distance by horseback. In 1862, he enlisted in Company B, 11th Kansas infantry, which was recruited from Holton. On Aug. 24, 1862, he was married to Martha M. Parrott, whom he had formerly known in Ohio. On Aug. 30, this company was mustered in, and Drake left his bride of a few days and served until the close of the war. In 1869 he was elected as county commissioner serving from 1870-1873, in which time the court house was built, and the Kansas Central rail road was completed to Holton. During the building of the railroad Drake had a construction contract, and graded many miles of road. At the completion of the road, a station was made at his place and given his name, and the railroad has ever since maintained a sidetrack at this place. By successful business ventures Drake acquired considerable wealth, most of which was in land, his farm where he resided being one of the largest in the state. He was the owner of considerable town property and a large amount of live stock. For several years he was president of the Holton City Bank. When he came to Holton, he was an averaged size man, but after the war he gained in flesh until for several years past he has been one of the largest men in the county. In disposition he was resolute and determined,and possessed a force of character that carried him through many severe trials, but his heart was as large as his body and as tender as his will was strong. He leaves besides his sorrowing wife; a son, Robert, of Omaha, Neb.; daughters Mrs. Susan Allen, of Perham, Minn.; Mrs. Maud Gamble, of Danville Ill.; Mrs. Kate Schoonmaker, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Miss Mattie and Miss Nellie, who live at home.
