Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, May 31, 1945 George Jackson, a most active, long-time and highly respected citizen of Nelson, died at his home here on Tuesday evening at the age of 87 years. He was a native of Illinois and came to Nebraska in 1880. On November 18, 1885 he was married to Miss Cora Ann Hosking (sic) of Elizabeth, Ill. Two children, Earl A. (Dallas, Texas) and Winnie (Mrs. Fred Kelly) were born of this union and survive him. Mrs. Jackson preceded her husband in death in 1942. After engaging in farming and stock-raising for a number of years, Mr. Jackson with his family became residents of Nelson, where he was engaged in business for several years. He was County Clerk, state representative from 1913 to 1919, serving as speaker of that body in 1915 and 1917; a member and vice president of the constitutional convention of 1920 and 1921. Mr. Jackson was a long-time member of the state board of agriculture and secretary of the Board from 1915 to 1933. The funeral will be held at the Methodist Church Friday afternoon at 2:30. Jackson, the son of William and Elizabeth Jackson, was born April 11, 1853 (sic), in Jo Daviess County, Illinois and departed this life from his home in Nelson, Nebraska in the evening of May 29, 1945 at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 11 days. In the year 1880 he came from Illinois to Lincoln, Nebr., working as a teamster, helping to build a greater Lincoln. Later he went to Del North, Colorado, where he secured a job as a stage driver from Del North to Summitville. This route carried him over the Rocky mountains (sic) and across the continental divide. Several years later he went back to Illinois and persuaded his mother to come to Nebraska with him and they located in Gage county (sic) which was also the residence of his brtoher (sic) Josiah. In the year 1885 on November 18, he was united in marriage to Miss Cora Ann Hosking of Elizabeth, Illinois, and they came immediately to their home in Gage County. After seven years of farming and stock raising in Gage county (sic), they came to Nuckolls county (sic) and located on a farm near Cadams, and there continued on in the occupation of raising pure bred stock. Out here in this central west he organized communities into singing schools - directing choirs at Cadams, Nora, and Nelson, having directed the Methodist church (sic) choir at Nelson for about twenty-one years. Mr. Jackson was a man who loved children and they loved him. Even to the day of his death, he greeted the children as they passed by the home. His work with and his high regard for the 4-H movement is known more than state-wide. The 4H building at the State Fair grounds is a fine memorial to his untiring efforts for the boys and girls of Nebraska. Nor did his interest and devotion stop with the boys and girls; his mind went out to the young men and women of the armed forces. He has outlined a program for our city to follow when the boys come home from the war. He thought of the dear old people, too, and was the first to suggest the sunset socials for which Nelson is noted. He enlisted the help of Rev. Mr. V.E. Shirley, pastor of the Christian church (sic) of Nelson at that time, and F.A. Scherzinger, and they launched this movement twenty-five years ago. He became a member of the Nelson Methodist church (sic) about 30 years ago under the pastorate of Rev. W.W. Hull. What shall we say more, for time fails us to tell of Brother Jackson's work at Cadams, Nora, Nelson and Lincoln. In the city of Nelson, in Nuckolls county (sic), and in the state of Nebraska; from the farm to the office of county clerk - from Nuckolls county (sic) to the legislative halls and on to the Speaker of the House in the state legislature, he served his fellowman. Like David of old, Brother Jackson served his own generation by the will of God. In his going he leaves a son and daughter of whom he was justly proud and we, too, are proud of them. The children are his son Earl A. and wife and two grandsons, Earl, Jr. and George of Dallas, Texas; the daughter, Mrs. Fred Kelly and husband and their four children, Gwen, Donna, Charlotte and Freddie. On November 1, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. His wife preceded him in death on March 6, 1942. Brother Jackson has left his home surrounded with flowers and trees of his own planting, to the home over there where the flowers bloom forever, and the frost of winter never comes, in the paradise of God. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church (sic) of Nelson at 2:30 p.m. Friday May 31st, and Rev. Clarence Powell was in charge. Rev. C.M. Foust read the Scripture and Rev. James Fowler offered prayer. Rev. W.W. Hull of Edgar, and Mr. W.H. Bronaw of Lincoln also paid a fitting tribute in their remarks of the deceased. Mrs. C.V. Powell read telegrams received from the following persons: A.J. Weaver, Falls City, Dean W.W. Burr, Arthur J. Weaver, Jr., Lincoln, Richard L. Metcalf, Omaha, Mrs. Florence Graham, Lincoln, which had been sent to the family by some of Nebraska's prominent citizens with whom Brother Jackson had had a beautiful fellowship. there were also letters received from C.G. Wallace and L.J. Wehrman of Hastings, Chas. H. Chappell of Minden, and Everett P. Wilson of Chadron. At the request of Mr. Jackson, the music was furnished by some of the members of the choir which he directed some years ago. Mrs. H.H. Hite presided at the piano. The pallbearers were Orval C. Myers, H.H. Hite, Jas. F. Murphy, Paul Hattan, Chas. R. Imler and W.L. Portwood. Interment was in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
