Last Saturday night about 11 o'clock the community was shocked to learn of the sudden death of Geo W. Krouskup. He was in attendance at the Good Templars Lodge of which he was a member and had taken part in the exercises. He had just made a short talk and sat down and suddenly fell over on the floor and expired. Dr. Rodgers was summoned, but he was beyond medical aid and expired in about 30 minutes. Mr. Krouskup was born in Chautauqua Co. New York in Sept. 1840 and lived until he was 8 years old when he moved to Wilmington, Ill. with his parents here he lived until he entered the army enlisting as private in Co. A. 39th Reg. Ill. Vol. Aug. 5th, 1861 he was discharged on account of poor health June 5th 1862 having been promoted from the ranks to sergeant. He was married to Jane Evans March 8, 1865 and to them 4 sons were born all of whom are living. In the fall of 1880 he moved with his family to Hamilton County to the farm which he lately left and has lived in this community since. The writer had only a slight acquaintance with the deceased but always heard him spoken of by his neighbors as a fine man a kind neighbor and in every way generally liked by all. He was a man of decided opinions and a man when he once made up his mind he was right could not be influenced to do what he believed to be wrong. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the family in their sudden bereavement. The funeral services were conducted by Daniel Hill Post G.A.R. assisted by the Stratford Lodge of I.O.G.T Rev. Hawn preaching the funeral sermon at the M.E. Church. ____________________________________ He is on a list of Civil War Veterans buried there, but the spelling on the list (Krouskop) does not match the spelling on his Civil War Record. His Civil War Pension has the name as Krouskup. He married Jane Evans on March 3, 1865 in Will Co., IL. The Armed Forces Graves Registration Record has his name as Krauskup and says that he has a "service marker only" which is probably a GAR star since he was a member of Winfield Scott Post #66 G.A.R. "U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865 about George Krauskup Name: George Krauskup Residence: Illinois Enlistment Date: 5 Aug 1861 Rank at enlistment: Sergeant State Served: Illinois Survived the War?: Yes Service Record: Enlisted in Company A, Illinois 39th Infantry Regiment on 11 Oct 1861.Mustered out on 27 Jun 1862.
