GEORGE MATTISON Ponca, Nebraska"The representative of the eighteenth district was born at Monroe, Wis., January 9, 1851. He has seen much of frontier life in the northwest, having gone with his parents to Iowa, and soon afterwards to Dakota territory, when he was quite young. Asa Mattison, his father, was a member of the first legislature in Dakota, just before the great Minnesota massacre, in 1862 and 1864, from Union county. When a boy of fourteen years he was left the head of the family, by his father's death, with very light resources beyond a "claim," as it was commonly called, and he experienced all the privations to which the early settler is usually subject. In 1872 he moved to Dixon county, near Ponca, where his home has been ever since. Mr. Mattison first engaged in the saw mill business, but since 1887 he has been farming. He owns 1,550 acres of land, and has given his time and attention to developing it heretofore, having taken no active part in politics until his republican constituents placed him in the house this session. Mr. Mattison is a married man, and has four boys. He is a very popular man in this section of the state. Mr. Mattison is chairman of the committee on privileges and elections, and belongs to the committees on roads and bridges, and county boundaries, county seats and township organizations." ------------------------------------------------------ Aged Pioneer Answers Final Summons Was prominent in Life of Community for Many Years George Mattison, widely known citizen of Ponca, passed away at 1:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 28, at his home in Ponca following an illness of many weeks duration. At the time of his death he was 84 years and 7 months old and was one of the oldest residents of the county, having lived here between 60 and 65 years. George Mattison was born in Monroe county, Wisconsin, January 9, 1851 and came at an early age to Dixon county with his parents. Early in his life he had to assume heavy responsibilities for his father died when he was 11 years old and the same time his older brother went away to the Civil war leaving young George the man of the household. On Setpember 15, 1874, he was married to Miss Flora Myers and to them four sons were born. Bert, the eldest, died in 1896. the others Guy, of Royal, Neb., Harry of Ponca, and George Jr., of Akron, Ia., survive as do one sister, Mrs. Lydia Mormon (Marmon) a resident of North Dakota, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Mattison was one of the real pioneers. In the early days he operated a ferry and a saw mill, later he farmed and for the past 25 years he has made his home in Ponca, where he was always active in community affairs. At one time he represented this county in the state legislature. He was an active member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges and at the time of his death had been a Mason longer than any other member of the local lodge. The community suffers a real loss in the death of Mr. Mattison. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:30 this afternoon with Rev. Geo. Bray in charge.
