Slack, son of Henry and Elizabeth Slack, was born in Tazwell County, Illinois, May 9, 1865. He was left an orphan at the age of four years. At the age of 19 years he united with the Methodist church at Jamestown, Nebraska. He was married to Nellie E. Bedea February 11, 1903, at Pawnee City, Nebraska. Five children were born to this union. Two daughters died in infancy. Three sons, Willie, Harold and George survive him. Mrs. Slack passed away January 29, 1913. On the same month of the year 1919, the subject of this sketch was suddenly called from his labor. In addition to their own family Mr. and Mrs. Slack had given a home to three orphan children, Harry McHugh, who is now serving his county in Germany, Jennie McHugh and Charley Slack who have faithfully and efficiently helped to keep the home and care for the smaller children since the death of the wife and mother. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dawson at the family home on Friday, January 30, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Pawnee City. Mrs. Slack was a sister of George E. Bedea and lived many years of her girlhood near Table Rock.
