Description	:	George was the son of William Isaac and Nancy Ann Ditmore Powell. He was the grandson of Riley and Harriett Rowan Powell of Cades Cove (Riley was killed in the Civil War) and the grandson of John Hendrickson and Amanda Bowling Ditmore who had moved from Charleston, SC to Graham County, NC and to TN. He was the brother of Elza Zenia, Amanda, Henry Clay, and Emely Zenia Powell. He was known as "Little George" to distinquish him from his uncle George W. Powell of Cades Cove. George married Martha Gregg, daughter of Julius "Jewel" and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bowman Gregg of Cades Cove on Oct 8, 1891. By 1897 they had three children (Althea, 5, Gertrude, 2, and William M.,1) and one (Georgia Ora) on the way. But on the late afternoon of Saturday, December 11, that year, George was shot from ambush while playing with his little children in his own yard after a day of work. Two years later, Sam "Long Hair" Burchfield was arrested for the murder. Powell had been summoned as a witness against Burchfield for running an illicit still, thus the motive for the murder. Martha remained a widow for eleven years until she married John Noah Burchfield in 1908. She died three years later.
