Tipton Newspaper, Thursday, July, 1937. OBITUARY GEORGE W. WINGERT, IOWA PIONEER RESIDENT, IS SUMMONED MONDAY Grew to Manhood in Cedar County George W. Wingert, a long time Cedar Rapids resident, died at the age of 89 years Monday at 1:30 p. m. at the home of his son Hubert Wingert, 614 First Ave. East. His death came suddenly. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 in the Moen chapel, conducted by the Rev. A. A. Brooks. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery near Tipton. He was born March 3, 1848, in Alleghany county, Maryland, the son of Peter and Isabel Wingert. He moved with his parents shortly thereafter to Peoria county, Illinois, where he lived until he was 8 years of age, at which time the family moved to Cedar county, Iowa, settling on what was known as the York Prairie community. There he grew to manhood. At an early age he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at York Prairie and was active in its support. Upon his removal to Cedar Rapids he transferred his membership to St. Paul's church. He always took a great interest in church work and was the oldest member of the Wesleyan class. On Oct. 20th, 1870, he was married to Mary E. Davis, who preceded him in death. On January 1, 1900, the family moved to Cedar Rapids. He was the last surviving son of Peter Wingert, Iowa pioneer, who had a share in the building of the foundations of this community. The other two sons, John and Frank, preceded him in death several years. Surviving are five sons, Harry W., Arthur G., Herbert D., and Frank R. all of Cedar Rapids, and Edgar P. of Davenport. One daughter, Mrs. Alice Boyson, died in 1933. Two sisters, Mrs. Alice Tevis of St. Louis, and Mrs. Anna Walkins of Sioux Falls, as well as nine grandchildren survive.
