Obit Tipton Conservative November 25, 1896 Page 4 Peter Wingert was born in Alleghany county, in the state of Maryland, October 9, 1816, and died at York Prairie, Cedar county, Iowa, November 14, 1896, aged 80 years, 1 month and 5 days. Coming to the west in an early day, he gave his attention to farming. He came on horse back to Peoria county, Illinois, in 1839. He was one of the first settlers in that county, and knew something of the hardships and privitations of frontier life. He was married to Miss Isabell Carey, in Maryland, in 1842. The had lived very happily together for more than 54 years. To them were born 10 children, seven of whom are now living. Mr. Wingert lived in Peoria county, Illinois, for 17 years, and then came to Cedar county, Iowa, settling at York Prairie in 1856. By industry and skill in his chosen calling he has made a great success of his work, and while toiling on the farm paid attention to the improvement of the community, assisting in building school houses and churches. While God so adundantly blessed him in temporal things, Mr. Wingert did not forget the needs of the church and of charitable and benevolent causes. He gave with unsparing hand to the support of the gospel, and the benevolent enterprises of the church. He had been a steward since the first organization of the class at York Prairie, and has always taken a deep interest in the prosperity of the church to which he belonged. When ready to assume new responsibilities his advice and counsels were always sought by pastors and officials and the general verdict was that his judgment was of a superior character. For more than 60 years he had been a Christian and a member of the church. At first he was connected with the Lutheran church, but for the last 54 years had been a member of the M. E. church. Long years since, Mr. Wesley, when speaking of the power of religion as seen in the lives of "the people called Methodist," said "our people die well." It might truthfully be said of Father Wingert he died well. "The chamber where the good man meets his fate, is privileged beyond the common walks of life." It was a benediction to visit the sick room. He was cheerful and hopeful, talking freely of the changes that awaited him, and making all necessary arrangements for his funeral services. His earnest Christian work, his prayers, gifts and faith will not soon be forgotten in the community in which he lived. He was loved and respected by all. His was a ministry of kindness and love. Religion to him was more than mere form and ceremony. He not only believed in fervent plenty, but he had the evidence of his acceptance with God. He could heartily endorse the words of the hymn we often sing: "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine: Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine; Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of his spirit, washed in his blood." He was instrumental in helping to organize the first Methodist class at York Prairie, and has taken a deep interest in its financial and spiritual interest for many years. When in 1867 it was thought advisable to build a new church, Father Wingert gave the ground on which it was erected, as also the largest subscription to the building fund. His home was ever open to the ministers of the gospel. He was the pastor's friend and advisor. By his death the church has lost a useful and consistent member, but God has called him to the fellowship of the church triumphant in glory. The bereaved wife, the sons and daughters and the other relatives, have the sympathy and prayers of their many friends. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. G. R. Manning, Revs. A. B. Calder, W. A. MacCormac and W. R. Dyre assisting in the service.
