Schutjer, 102, of Brookings, died Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Brookview Manor, in Brookings. Georgia Elnora Smidt was born on March 11, 1909 at White, SD to Rieke and Justine (Tellinghuisen) Smidt. She grew up on the family farm and attended country schools. In 1930 Georgia married Allen Schutjer in White. They had three children. Georgia and Allen farmed in the White and Brookings area for 25 years and then moved to Brookings. Allen died on July 11, 1987 and Georgia remained in Brookings. She was employed at United Retirement Center as a dietary aid for 11 years. She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Aho, and Judith Faye Schutjer, both of Brookings, SD; one son, Gary Schutjer, of Brookings, SD; four grandchildren, Jackie Zwack, of Port Charlotte, FL, Sue Norberg, of Sioux Falls, SD, Kim Winterfeld, of Brookings, SD and Gail Collins of Brookings, SD; 14 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren; one sister, Jeane Woodard, of White, SD and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 57 years, Allen; her brothers Wierd (Ann) Smidt, Rieke (Mary) Smidt, Nick Smidt and Dick (Ella) Smidt; her sisters, Meta (Heye) Boomgarden, Etta (Jake) Boomgarden, Johanna (Al) Ullrich, Min (Vernon) Enevoldson; one great granddaughter, Aimee Collins and a son-in-law Eldon Aho. She enjoyed her role as a homemaker. She liked to sew and was a fabulous cook. Her family especially enjoyed her homemade pies. All of her life she was a faithful and devoted church member where she taught Sunday school, played piano and held offices. She always enjoyed competitive sports and happily attended basketball games with her son Gary until she was in her 90s, even in the frigid weather. She was an avid reader and kept an extensive correspondence with family and friends until her eyesight failed. She was a quiet, unassuming person, whose love and concern for others will be a continuing inspiration to all of us who were blessed to share her life. Funeral services will be 2:00pm Friday, September 9, 2011 at Rude's Funeral Home, in Brookings. Visitation and lunch will begin at 12:00pm Friday at the Rude's Funeral Home.
