Walton, son of the late Benjamin and Martha Walton, was born September 18, 1900, in Geneva. The heritage from parents and environment produced a man of quiet, unassuming character, inquisitive in nature and penetrating in thought. A natural talent for music developed during youth, with Gerald becoming an adept with piano, violin, clarinet and guitar. He was well known as a performing musician during his second and third decades, traveling throughout the contiguous areas with dance orchestras and musical groups. After graduating from Geneva high school in 1920, Gerald attended the University Of Nebraska School Of Music and functioned in the Orpheum vaudeville circuit in Omaha and Lincoln. A bond of marriage with Miss Ruby M. Sole of Geneva was begun in 1925, after which they travelled extensively throughout the western states. Gerald was the father of three sons, George, Gerard and Gerome, who in later years enjoyed participating with their father in the Geneva city band. Annual events that were eagerly awaited were the series of city band concerts, the Fairbury Band Festival and the Nebraska state fair. Gerald and Ruby served the community in various capacities while maintaining business and fraternal relationships in Geneva. Gerald chose barbering as a means of livelihood, having served an apprenticeship in his father's shop, and maintained a continuum of that business until recent years. He served many years as secretary of Geneva Camp No. 558, Modern Woodmen of America and also as secretary of Geneva Lodge No 79, AF&AM. Masonry was the great light and love of his life. He seemed not to heed what others thought of him, but rather that they thought. He believed that truth comes to each of us—distorted and bent by our own passions and prejudices—colored by the limited environment of our sensorium. Gerald passed away at Colonial Manor in Geneva September 4, 1969, having been preceded by his parents, his wife, and his two brothers. Mourning his demise are his three sons and their families, many nephews and nieces and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the Kritner-Farmer funeral home in Geneva at 2 p. m. Monday, September 8, by the Geneva Masonic lodge with the officers in charge. John C. Gewacke gave the tribute to the deceased. Mrs. Gayle Walton Fuller furnished organ music. Pallbearers were George, Dr. Gerard, and Gerome Walton, John Bixby, Lester Reemts and Cmdr. Norman Sothan, USN. Honorary pallbearers were Ralph Reemts, Joe Ruth and Charles Schaber.
