Services were held Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Barb Hart officiating. He grew up in that area and attended Zyba Country School. He later graduated from Upland High School in 1944. Following graduation, he farmed until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950. He completed a 40-week training course in electronics and then taught radar at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and returned to farm with his mother on the family farm. Gerald married Margaret Smith at the Methodist Church in Ulysses, Nebraska, on August 11, 1957. Four sons were blessed to this union, Edward, Robert, Charles and Jerry. Gerald waited until his sons were married to gain daughters. Gerald had a deep love for his family and friends. His grandchildren were very special to him. He had a deep passion for farming that continued his entire life. He was blessed with the gift of memorization, which was used when giving readings at the PTA and in his Masonic work. He was an avid bowler, belonging to teams in Hastings, Kearney and Minden. Gerald was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church in Minden, Order of the Eastern Star, Past Master of Minden Masonic Lodge #127, member of Franklin Lodge #264, York Rite, Scottish Rite and the Tehama Shrine. Gerald served as Grand Commander of the Knights Templar of Nebraska in 1999. He was a member of the Minden American Legion Post #94, Nebraska Farmers Union, Danish Brotherhood and had been on the Board of Directors of the Farmer's Cooperative Grain and Supply. He was a 4-H leader and superintendent at the Kearney County Fair, always helping his boys and many other children with their projects. Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Minden; four sons, Edward Sorensen and his wife Roxanne of Axtell, Robert Sorensen and his wife Annette of Grand Island, Charles Sorensen and his wife Christina of Richland, Washington; four grandchildren, Audra Sorensen and her fiance Jeremy Dennis, Michael Sorensen, Kathryn Sorensen and Crystal Kleen and her husband Jason of Minden; one great-grandson, Kendall Kleen; his twin sister, Grace Jensen of Upland and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd; sister-inlaw, Marguerite; brother-inlaw, James Jensen; and great-nephew, Jeremy Sorensen.
