GERALD DEAN SMITH Gerald Dean, son of Valley LeRoy and Selma Elizabeth Jacobsen Smith, was born December 1,1935, in Carroll County. He graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1954. That fall he started college at Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. After one semester, Jerry enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served in the South Pacific. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa, eventually settling in Des Moines where he started working for American Republic Insurance Company in 1960. While working there, Jerry also earned his Bachelor of Arts from Drake University. He continued working for American Republic until his retirement on December 1, 1991. Jerry enjoyed fishing, especially the annual trip to Bolton Lake, Canada, hunting, and his pet dogs, Maggie and Casey. Of special importance to him was his family, including his many nieces and nephews. He thoroughly enjoyed his neighborhood in Des Moines. Jerry died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home, 122 SW 52nd Street, Des Moines, on Monday, September 22, 1997, at the age of 61 years, nine months, 21 days. Besides his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by two brothers: Wayne and Eddie Smith; a sister, Nadine Smith; a brother-in-law, Sam Nielson; a sister-in-law, Betty Smith; and a great-nephew, Matthew John Nielson. Jerry is survived by two brothers: Marvin Smith and his wife, Louise, of Haines, Alaska and Merle Smith, of Council Bluffs; three sisters: Carol Jean Nielson of Coon Rapids; Neva and her husband, Jerry Wilson, of Glidden; and Jane and her husband, Jim Stangl, of Glendale, Arizona; aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
