Reverend John Emerson will officiate the 10:30 a.m. services from the Ascension Lutheran Church. Lois Shirbroun will serve as organist and vocalists will be Sam Cretsinger and Carolyn Miller. Interment will be in Coon Rapids Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers are John Nielson, Rick Stangl, Dean Wilson, Jay Drake, Brian Slater and Eric Emery. Honorary casket bearers are Kenneth Betts, Fred Long, Bob Henak, Glen Knight, and Wayne Textor. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 5 at Ohde Funeral Home in Coon Rapids. SELMA ELIZABETH SMITH Selma was born April 18, 1907 in Guthrie County, the daughter of Chris and Mary Kathryn Mikkelsen Jacobsen. She attended grade school in Guthrie County, completing the sixth grade. Selma then worked as a housekeeper and babysitter for various families in the area. On July 5, 1923, Selma married Valley Smith in Coon Rapids. Nine children were born to this union. Selma worked at Armour’s for several years performing several different jobs. She then took a job as custodian for Coon Rapids High School and subsequently helped in the kitchen at Southside Cafe. Selma retired in 1983 in order to care for Valley. He died October 15,1985. Selma was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She loved crocheting, flowers and being with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Selma was a very good cook. On Monday, June 2, 1997, Selma died suddenly at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll. She reached the age of 90 years, one month and 15 days. Besides her parents and husband, Selma was preceded in death by two sons: Wayne and Eddie Smith; a daughter, Nadine Smith; one great-grandson, Matthew John Nielson; four brothers: Jake, Clarence, Chris and Harry Jacobsen; one sister, Edna Moylan; a daughter-in-law, Betty Smith; and a son-in-law, Sam Nielson. Selma is survived by her children: Marvin Smith and his wife, Louise of Haines, AK; Merle Smith of Council Bluffs; Carol Jean Nielson of Coon Rapids; Jerry Smith of Des Moines; Neva and her husband, Jerry Wilson, of Glidden; Jane and her husband, Jim Stangl, of Glendale, AZ; 15 grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Kathryn Long of Coon Rapids; and Harriet Kindrew of Port Charlotte, FL; and two. sisters-in-law: Mary Jacobsen of Bayard and Gertrude Jacobsen of Coon'Rapids. Selma is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
