Smith was born Feb. 29, 1924 at Coon Rapids. He made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Moylan at Scranton and attended the Greene county rural schools until graduating from the eighth grade. He then lived with his parents here until entering the armed services. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy Sept. 14, 1942 and received his boot training at Great Lakes training station. He served on the U.S.S. Charles F. Hughes and the U.S.S. Claxton as seaman first class and was discharged March 22, 1946 at Minneapolis, Minn. He received the Good Conduct medal and the Presidential Unit citation. Since returning home he has been working with his father in the dray business. He was a member of the local American Legion post. Casket bearers at his funeral were Gurney Parker, Arnold Dobson, Clair Clark, Bill Davis, Ed Honsicker and Bill Mozena. Funeral services for Wayne, Edward and Nadine Smith were held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon at the Coder Funeral home with the Rev. Evan Routh, pastor of the local Church of Christ, in charge. Mrs. Roswell Jordan and Mrs. Delbert Ford sang "Abide With Me" and "Someday We'll Understand" with Mrs. Russell Newcomm playing the accompaniment. Burial was in the Coon Rapids cemetery. Left to mourn their passing are their parents Mr. and Mrs. Valley Smith. This community was shocked by the greatest tragedy ever to hit the town when the news spread rapidly Monday morning that four of our fine young people had met instant death when hit by a fast train at a crossing at Glidden late Sunday evening. Making the event even more shocking was the fact that three of the youth were members of one family, children of Mr. and Mrs. Valley Smith. Killed were Wayne Smith, 25, Ed L. Smith, 18, Nadine Smith, 16, and Eugene Dorpinghaus, 20, the latter the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Dorpinghaus. The young folks, riding in a 1939 Chevrolet driven by Wayne Smith were enroute home after spending the evening at a Carroll roller skating rink. The car was traveling south and was struck dead center by the fast Northwestern train "City of Denver" traveling west with its next scheduled stop at Omaha, Nebr. The train carried the wreckage of the car and two bodies on beyond the town of Glidden before it could be brought to a stop. Two of the bodies were found east of the Glidden depot. All were instantly killed.
