Description	:	Gerald "Tom" Edward Carter, 89, of Shelby, passed away March 3, 2012, at his home in Shelby. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. James Cooper officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola with a 7 p.m. rosary following at the funeral home. Gerald was born April 7, 1922, to Edward and Jessie (Eyler) Carter north of Shelby. He attended school in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School in 1940. Following high school, Gerald started farming three miles north of Shelby where he began using horses. On June 5, 1945, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Langer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. To this union three children were born. He continued farming until 1956 when the family moved to Tucson, Ariz., because of the drought. After three years they moved back to Shelby where Tom farmed and worked at Shelby Lumber Yard. Tom retired at the age of 75. He and Dorothy moved into town in 1995 where he resided until his passing. He enjoyed playing bridge, having coffee at Joe's Quick Shoppe and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 66 years. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Shelby; children, Linda (Gene) Scholz of Omaha, Jack (Mary Ann) Carter of Shelby and Leanna (Barry) Snodgrass of Gretna; seven grandchildren, Traci (Brian) Policek of Sac City, Iowa, Tonya (Robert Jr.) Weberg of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Todd (Jennifer) Scholz of Omaha, Lishelle McKinley of Bennington, April (Matthew) Hock of Culbertson, Bradley (Carrie) Carter of Rising City and Justin Snodgrass of Omaha; 14 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Jessie Carter; two brothers, Dale and Dean; five sisters, Girtie Kumpf, Mabel Kumpf, Ann Cook, Nellie Cox, June Hernbloom, two at infancy Donna Mae and Eliza, and one at birth. Memorials are suggested to the family.
