Read More	Dayton Review Thursday, January 31, 1957 Jerry Conrad Dies Suddenly Saturday Morning, Jan. 26 Stores Closed Two Hours For Service It was the suddenness of death that shocked everyone in the local Business Circle last Saturday forenoon, as soon as it was known to be a fact that Jerry Conrad had died. People refused to believe it at first, and the full meaning came slowly and brought a wave of sadness that was reflected in a quiet that settled all the way up and down the business blocks. Business slowed almost to a standstill and people smiled but little for a few hours. Jerry Conrad, who had come to Dayton as a young man years ago, worked as a hired hand on local farms for a few years, then taking employment in local business for a time, then buying and operating local business places of his own since that time. Always more active in affairs which were sponsored for the good of the community than the average person. Jerry became well known in a very short time. Whether or not you agreed with him, and most people did agree, one had to admire the downright courage it took to stand for the community good against all types of opposition. Jerry was respected for his loyalty and enthusiasm for Dayton. Jerry had hundreds of good friends in and around this area. This was in evidence almost at once, as any number of persons asked, What can I do?. And many started at once in several ways to show their feelings toward Jerry and his family. And the good deeds are certainly not ended yet, for the community is hardly over the shock and the empty feeling. Services were held at the Carson Funeral Home at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon and at 2:00 o'clock in the Emanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. R. E. Carlson officiated, with Carsons making the arrangements. Rev. and Mrs. Carlson sang, "In The Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied by Miss Marie Thomann. Mrs. Edith Skoglund and Mrs. Ruth Strand cared for the flowers. Casket bearers were close friends among the local garage men and truckers, Joy Carlson, Clifford Kalkwarf, William Blanchet, Kelley Stevens, Russell Brown and Richard Chinburg. Burial was made in Dayton Cemetery. Dayton stores locked up for two hours during the service in his honor, so scores could attend the funeral. Obituary will appear next week. Jerry Conrad was one of those persons who always wore a smile, was considered more than healthy, rugged, strong and one who people thought just simply could not die. Yet on Saturday morning, weather cold, his car refused to start. He rode down town with a neighbor, Dean Thomas, looked up Johnny Sandholm, D-X Station Man, engaged him to start the car. They both enjoyed a cup of warming coffee in Dick's Cafe on Main Street and walked but talking and laughing about Jerry's Big "M" as he called his car. Jerry walked between Johnny's pickup and another car, preparatory to entering the truck. At this time something must have happened for Jerry fell or suddenly sat down on the icy pavement. A friend was about to help him up, but he stood up without help, and did get into Johnny's truck, or almost in. In the excitement that followed, it is about impossible to remember correctly every detail. Jerry had an odd expression on his face, and answered the question, "Did you fall down?" with a low toned, "What's the matter with you?" He then turned about half way around, raised one hand to his face, and slumped over. He was carried across the street to Peterson's Plumbing Store, and a Doctor was summoned. The Doctor was there in a moment but even with the help of the Fire Department Resuscitator, he was dead, almost instantly. Cause of death was a heart attack. CONRAD Gerald (Jerry) Evans Conrad was born at Cumberland, Iowa, on Dec. 16, 1912, and died of a heart attack very suddenly Jan. 26 in downtown Dayton. He was graudated from high school at Nodaway and then worked for some years in his home area. In 1936 he came to Dayton and had resided here ever since. He was engaged in several business enterprises here. He operated the Dayton Produce for a time and later, the DX Oil station. He was for a time the manager of the Barquist Livestock Company and following its sale to Hormel's, had been engaged in trucking. On June 30, 1938 he married Ione Newholm of Dayton. Mrs. Conrad survives as do four children - Larry, who is in the navy at Great Lakes, Ill., Keith, Joan and Sandra at home. Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Blanche Conrad of Cumberland; three brothers and one sister - Don Conrad of Somers, Verl Conrad of San Francisco, Calif., Boyd Conrad of Springfield, Ohio and Mrs. Wanda Myers of Cumberland. His father died in 1943.
