Description	:	Funeral services were held Friday, July 25, 1986, at 10:30 a.m. for Gerald Roland Walz, 76, of rural Strawberry Point. The funeral was held at the Sacred Heart Parish, Volga. Rev. Bertram Kalb officiated the service with burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Elkader. Pallbearers were Jerry Bergan, Jim Meehan, Craig Bergan, Pat Meehan and Jim Downey. Honorary bearers were Selmer Olson, Walter Morris, Ray Carolan, Harold Weber, Martin Penneton and Joe Pieper. Roland Walz was born May 8, 1910, in rural Elkader, the son of Jake and Clara Pluemer Walz. He attended schools in the Elkader and Garnavillo area. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Walz was married to Rachel Batchelder and became the father of four children. He chose farming for his career and enjoyed the outdoors. He was a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Walz died July 23, 1986, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader. Survivors include his wife Rachel, three daughters and one son, Mrs. Joe (Marilyn) Bergan of Elkader, Eldon Walz of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Kenneth (Rosayln) Hurley of Volga, and Linda Walz; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; six brothers, Wilbur of Delaware, Arnold of Luana, Lambert of Fairfax, Calif, Edward of Elkader, and Norbert of Monona; two sisters, Mrs. Georgia Downey of Guttenburg, and Mrs. Gene (Florence) Meehan of Anamosa; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jake Walz; one sister Mrs. Lawrence (Jeanette) Downey; and one granddaughter, Annette Walz.
