Hourigan and Mary Murphy Hourigan on Sept. 27, 1913, at Geneva, and passed away March 17, 1995, at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend, at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 18 days. She was the third of five children in the family. Geraldine attended school at St. Stephen’s in Exeter and at St. Joseph’s School in Geneva through the eighth grade and graduated from Geneva High School in 1932. Following high school, Geraldine held several jobs throughout the area including working as a telephone operator and as a Civil Service clerk, at the Fairmont Air Base during World War II. When her brother, Charles, was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, and returned to Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, Gerry requested an employment transfer to Denver to be near her brother during his recuperation. Gerry continued her Civil Service career in the Denver area until her retirement in 1978. Throughout her adult life, Gerry’s family and her religious faith were the nucleus of her life. She always remembered her nieces and nephews with cards and gifts and she traveled back to Nebraska many times for relative’s graduations, weddings and funerals. Following her mother’s death in 1955, Gerry welcomed her father into her Denver home, caring for him until his death in 1961. Geraldine’s strong religious faith comforted her through the many losses, disappointments, and afflictions she was asked to bear. As a result of this faith, she was appointed as Eucharistic minister at St. Mary Magdalene’s church and she was allowed the privilege of taking communion to the ill and affirmed of the parish. Gerry also served as a volunteer at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver. In 1982, Gerry and her sister, Kathleen, had the privilege of visiting the Shrines of Mary at Lourdes and Fatima. Failing health made it necessary for Geraldine to return to Nebraska in November of 1992. She made her home at Warren Memorial Hospital and manor in Friend, until her death on St. Patrick’s Day. Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Hourigan; a brother, Charles Hourigan; and three sisters, Marguerite Swails, Kathleen Wendel and Frances Jean Ekeler. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Hourigan; six nephews John Swails, Patrick Hourigan, Michael Hourigan, Timothy Hourigan, Lawrence Wendel and Jerome Ekeler; four nieces, Mariellen Wendel, Kathy Gillan, Sue Ann Romohr, and Marguerite Ekeler. Gerry also leaves to mourn many cousins, great nieces and nephews, and her friends in the Denver area. The Rosary was prayed on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Farmer Funeral Home in Geneva. The funeral mass was said at St. Joseph’s Church in Geneva on Monday, March 20 with Fathers Maurice current and James Cooper officiating. Carole Prater served as organist, accompanying the St. Joseph’s Women’s Choir in the religious selections, “Here I Am Lord,” “How Great Thou Art,” “Praise the Lord of heaven,” and “Be Not Afraid.” Gaylord Songster served as lector. The Homily was delivered by Father James Cooper of St. Joseph’s Church in Friend, Bob and Sue Romohr carried the offertory gifts. Servers were Marc Reinsch, Matt Johnson, and C.J. Rust. Pallbearers were Michael and Timothy Hourigan, Bob Romohr, Jerome Ekeler, Waldean Biegert and Sam L. Gillan. Honorary pallbearers included nephews John Swails, Patrick Hourigan, and Lawrence Wendel. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal April 6th, 1995 page 5.
