Gerhard Magnus Malmin, son of Maurits and Karen Malmin was born near Stavanger, Norway on May 18, 1881, and died suddenly at his home June 17, 1955, at the age of 74. When he was a few weeks old his parents brought the family to the United States, settling in Story County near McCallsburg. He was confirmed in the Salem Lutheran church in Roland. After completing a business course at Jewell college, he owned and operated a general merchandise business in Joyce for seven years. In 1915 he was united in marriage to Oline Almlie of Bricelyn, Minn. To this union five children were born, two of whom died in infancy. The living children are Marian, (Mrs. Raymond Skartvedt) of Ellsworth, Marvin of Des Moines, and Carmelia (Mrs. Olger B. Lenning) of Story City. The family lived on a farm west of McCallsburg until 1929 at which time they moved to McCallsburg. After moving to McCallsburg, Mr. Malmin was engaged in livestock buying until recently. He was a charter member of the Bethany Lutheran church and served as treasurer for nearly 24 years. Surviving are his wife and children, one grandson, Larry Malmin, a brother, Martin Malmin, of Slater, Minn; and a sister, Clara (Mrs. Peter Egenes) of McCallsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters. Mr. Malmin was active in church and community affairs and held several offices which included president of the Farmers Co-operative Creamery company, president of Warren Township Farm Bureau, secretary of Farmers Grain company, president of Farmers Grain company, president, secretary and manager of the McCallsburg Shipping association, mayor of McCallsburg for two terms and from 1934 to 1943 he served on the school board of the McCallsburg Consolidated school.
