Alvin Sigafus officiating. Pall bearers were Leslie Kernen, Gilbert Rider, Kenneth Kernen, There Kernen, Clint Action, and Marvin Roberts. Created by: Marty & Harley Gertrude Mae Kernen, daughter of David and Dora Devers, was born November 29, 1883 in the vicinity of Nodaway, Iowa and departed from this life in Sherwood Hospital, Sacramento, California, March 18, 1964 at 9:50 a.m. at the age 80 years, 3 months, and 18 days. On December 22, 1904, she was united in marriage to John Kernen. To this union were born two sons, Delmar Leo, now residing in Panorama City, California and Marvin Berdean now residing in North Highlands, California. Besides her two sons, she leaves to mourn three grandchildren, Jimmy and Judy of children of Delmar, Leo and Jerry sons of Marvin Berdean. Gertrude was one of eleven children, Willard, Rose, Hazel, Gertrude, Abbie, Iva, Ida, Myrtle, Jessie,, Dolly, and Vina. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband, and three sisters. Gertrude spent most of her life on farms in the vicinity of Nodaway and Carbon. She moved to Villisca in 1939 and lived there until November 1962, when she moved to Sacramento, California. She was member of the Presbyterian Church in Nodaway, Iowa and was also a member of the United Presbyterian Women’s Association of Villisca and several social clubs. Gertrude, more naturally called, Gertie, by her many close relatives and friends loved to be up and around and active all her life. She made many trips during her later life to visit her sons in California and her sisters in many distant points, always returning to her beloved home in Villisca and her many friends. She realized that her family must for various reasons be located at many distant points, but dearly loved the times when her many nephews, nieces, and friends and their family would stop at her house to visit for awhile on their way through Villisca.
