Description	:	John Kernen, son of Gotlieb and Louisa Kernen, was born on November 15, 1878 in Nodaway township and departed from this life at the Veteran's Hospital at Des Moines on August 9, 1938 at 12:00 o'clock at the age of 58 years, 8 months, and 24 days. On June 13, 1897, when a young man of 19, he enlisted in Company B. and sailed for the Philippines; on April 25, 1899, he was wounded at Calumpit, P. To this union were born two sons, Delmar Leo and Marvin Berdean. Besides his wife and two sons, he leaves to mourn two sisters and five brothers, Mrs. Clara Munson of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Louisa Rider, Fred, Bert, Will, Henry, and Charles Kernen, all of Nodaway, with a host of other relatives and friends. His father, mother, and sister, Paulene, preceded him in death. Years ago he was converted during a tent meeting and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. John was of a loving and tender disposition, always thinking of others before himself, ready at all times to cheer any who were in need of comfort. His bright, cheery smile and greeting always brought sunshine into the lives of those with whom he came in contact. He was a devoted companion, a kind father, and a good neighbor, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. although we part with him with breaking hearts, we know it is part of God's Devine plans and that he awaits us with beckoning hands. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Nodaway, Friday afternoon, August 12, 1938 at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. E. B. Stewart, assisted by Rev. Galillard. A mixed quartet composed of Clarissa Neill, Sadie Haley, Martin Taylor, and Rev. Galliard sang three beautiful selections, "Beautiful Life of Somewhere" "Going Down the Valley" and "Nearer My God To Thee," assisted by Helen Bowers at the piano. The pall bearers were Forest Cochran, Harry Goodvin, Homer Houck, Rev. Houck, Joe Marvick, and Ralph Stewart, neighbors of Mr. Kernen. The Spanish American War Veterans marched in a body, namely, Ben Baer, George Beck, Albert Cassell, Cassius Dawson, O. D. Deer, Tim Erickson, Elmer Freshour, E. F. Gauthier, J. W. Kane, Hugh Keever, and D. W. Turner. The firing squad represented the American Legion. These were John R. Anderson, Otto Anderson, Harve Garner, Emery Patton, Glen Stargell, and A. W. Tornquist; the bugler was Lewis Odell. Military services were held at the grave. Interment was in the Nodaway Cemetery. Those from a distance who attended the funeral was Clara Munson of Denver, Colorado, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Mitchell and children, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Kernen, Edna Douglas, Fred and John Kernen of Bedford; John Spring and daughter, Ruth, and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Spring of Sharpsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Groff of Lenox; Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Conway and Mrs. Mary Olson of Creston; Mr. and Mrs. Dave Devers and family of Stanton; Mrs. Myrtle Langloss and Mrs. Geraldine Smith of Clarinda; Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Weed of Thurman; Catherine Stidd of Shenandoah; Wallie Mattice of Rockport, Missouri, and Thomas Miller of Maryville, Missouri; the later being very intimate friends of Mr. Kernen.
