HEINRICH HAYEN The death of Mrs. Heinrich Hayen occurred at her home on Grand street last week Wednesday morning, at two o'clock. Mrs. Hayen became afflicted with a stroke of paralysis, March 26, 1920, whereupon the family removed from the farm to Monticello, with the hope that the rest from the active farm labors would in time improve her condition. She was given the best of medical care, but her strength slowly ebbed, instead of increasing. Two weeks prior to her death she was taken ill with pneumonia, which disease caused her ultimate demise. Mrs. Hayen was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Johann H. Harms. Her maiden name was Gesche Katherine Harms. She was born June 10, 1851, at Repsholt, Ostfriesland, Germany. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the town of her birth. In 1869 the Harms family immigrated to the United States and settled in Wayne township. The deceased was married twice, first to Gerd Hagedon, March 25, 1874. Mr. Hagedon died April 19, 1876. There were no children born to this union. The deceased was again married in 1877, to Heinrich Hayen, who survives his wife. There were eight children born to this union, all of whom survive Mrs. Hayen. The children are Johann and Heinrich Hayen, both of Wayne township; Mrs. Meta Hedden, of Scotch Grove township; Mrs. Elise Tobiason, of Monticello; Mrs. Maria Thumann and Mrs. Alma Siebels, of Amber; Mrs. Gesine Rieken and Mrs. Catherine Doden, both of Wayne township. In addition to these children, fourteen grand children survive Mrs. Hayen together with one brother, Henry Harms of Wayne township, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Weers and Mrs. Engel Herren, both of Monticello. The funeral services were held last Saturday, March 31. Short services were held in Monticello at the family home at 11 o'clock and final services were held at Zion’s Lutheran church, Wayne township, at 1 o'clock. Rev. J. Willms, the pastor of the Wayne Lutheran church, officiated at both services. He spoke in English at the home upon the text found in Phil. 1-21 and at the church in the German language using as a subject a text found in Isaiah 61-10. Both services were largely attended by a group of sorrowing relatives and friends. Mrs. Hayen was a devout Christian. She always found great spiritual help in the teachings of the church of which she was a member. her husband and children will greatly miss her for she was a wife and mother in the truest sense of the word, having at heart not only the bodily comfort, but also the spiritual welfare of all about her.
