S. There was an outbreak of cholera on the ship and Elbert, Jacob, Dirk and the son of Martinus, Arie, died of the plague and were either buried at sea or on McNab's Island in Halifax Harbor where the ship stopped to get medical help. A ship was brought into the harbor and the ill were taken to it for treatment. Those who were well, including the remaining deJongs were put ashore on McNab's Island and housed in tents. It was April and it was cold, rainy and snowy. All of their belongings had to be burned and they were given new clothes and blankets. Still it was very uncomfortable. Almost 400 people died from the cholera. After the ship had been cleaned, the people who were well boarded again and sailed to New York Harbor where they were quarantined for three weeks. As they left Halifax, some women were given new clothes and a small sum of money. The deJongs took the train to Chicago where they caught another train to Eddyville Iowa. Pella was their destination, so they went on by horse drawn wagon. Two sons had immigrated the year before and were waiting for them in Pella. The deJongs bought farm land and by 1880 owned 154 acres, some of that was woodland from which they sold the timber. They had some animals - more swine and poultry than anything else. They also had apple trees and bees for honey.
