| Description | : | Martinus was the third son of Pieter Sr and Gijsbertje (vanHouwelingen) deJong born on a farm near the city of Arkel in the Netherlands. As required by law, Martinus registered for military service when he was 19 years old. He sought a replacement who entered service Dec 15, 1855 for a 5 year term. At the end of the 5 years he completed his service thereby completing Martinus military service.
