Gilbert Charles Gates, son of Herbert and Nora Russell Gates was born at Gates, Nebraska, May 30, 1902 Until he had reached eight years of age he lived and attended school at Gates, then he moved to Broken Bow, Nebraska where he finished grade school. About 1919 he came to Brocksburg, Nebraska. In the intervening years prior to 1934, Gilbert made his home at Brocksburg, Martin, South Dakota and Gates, Nebraska. On April 5, 1924, Miss Olive Rowan became the bride of Gilbert Charles Gates at Burke, South Dakota. To this union was born one daughter, Getha Margaret. In 1934 Gib brought his family back to Mills, Nebraska. He settled then southwest of Mills. Throughout the years he spent his life as a farmer. He was a great lover of children. Having been preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers, two sisters and one half-sister, Gib is survived by his widow, Olive Dorothy; a daughter, Getha Margaret Gates Ritterbush of Mills; one grandson, Roger Leroy Ritterbush; and one sister, Mrs. Dora Robertson of Omaha. There is also a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.
