He is the son of the late Mike and Mary (Lachman) Rau, and he was born August 23, 1899. On November27, 1923, at Defiance, Iowa, he was married to Lidwina Eisterhold. Lidwina was born March 17, 1903, at Rich Fountain, Missouri. Her parents were Frank and Dora (Richter) Eisterhold. Lidwina came to Iowa at the age of fifteen to keep house for her brothers who farmed south of Defiance, Iowa. Gilbert and Lidwina lived at Westphalia after their marriage and these children were born at Westphalia: Dorothy Rau Gaul (1925); Marie Rau Grote (19Q6); Mike (1927); Leo (1928); Zita Rau Bruck (1930); Alma Rau Kramer (1931); Leonard 1932);Jeanette Rau Mikels (1933); Lita (1934); Martha Rau Mumm (1935); Verla Rau Mumm (1938); Mervin Rau Corbin (1939); Patricia Rau Kuether (1941). The family moved to a farm northeast of Portsmouth in 1944. Gilbert, Jr. (1945) and Judy Rau Jones (1946) were born there. In 1955, the family moved to a farm near Manilla, Iowa, and they lived there until retiring from farming in 1964. Gilbert and Lidwina then moved back to Portsmouth and this is where they now reside. Their daughter, Lita, became a Franciscan Sister in 1952. She died suddenly in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1973. Their son, Mike, passed away in 1975. Their sons, Mike, Leo and Gil served in the Army.
