Gladys was born July 10, 1919 in Larned, KS, the daughter of Fred and Ester (Swanson) Nelson. She attended Bethany College after high school for one year then returned to the family farm. She married Eugene Edmond Haun August 1st, 1941 before he was shipped out to the south Pacific during WWII. They returned to Kansas after the war and lived on the farmstead 6 miles north of Larned until 1965 when the family moved to Hutchinson, Kansas. There Eugene worked as a fluidics engineer for Cessna. While in Hutchinson, Gladys went to Hutchinson Community College and received an A.A. She then went on to Wichita State University and received her B.A. in Education and a M.A. Degree in English. She was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the National English Teachers of America. Gladys taught at Hutchinson Community College till she retired in 1975. In retirement both she and her husband were avid golfers at Carey Park where she was a president of the Women’s Golf Association. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Hutchinson where she was in the Sunrise Chorale and chairman of the Liturgical Arts Task Force. She was also a member of the Reno Choral Society. Gladys and her husband moved to Lenexa, Kansas in 2000 where she lived until 2017 when she moved to Tonganoxie, Kansas. She was a member of the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Haun (Retired farmer and engineer at Cessna Fluid Power) in March 2001. Survivors include; three sons, Errol Haun (Retired Prof of Piano at University of Northern Colorado), Denver, CO, Duane Haun (Retired Sr. System Analyst at Garman), Tonganoxie, Randy Haun (Retired Sr. Technical Manager at General Dynamics), Gilbert, AZ; twelve grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to the Lawrence Children’s Choir at https://www.lawrencechildrenschoir.org/donate-now-2 where her greatgrandchildren carried on her musical legacy.
