Edgecombe was born to John W. and Mary Dingman on May 6, 1897, at Stockton, Cal., and passed away Monday, March 21, 1988, at the Fillmore County Hospital, Geneva, at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 15 days. Edgecombe was born to John W. and Mary Dingman on May 6, 1897, at Stockton, Cal., and passed away Monday, March 21, 1988, at the Fillmore County Hospital, Geneva, at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 15 days. She was one of four children in the family. Gladys’ family moved to Edgar when she was six months old, where she started school, continuing her education in Geneva when the family moved there. Gladys was united in marriage to Tyler Edgecombe of Geneva on October 11, 1913, in Fairbury. To this union four children were born, Arlene, Mary, Jean and John. During World War II, Gladys was asked to temporarily help out on a part-time basis at the Nebraska Signal. The position became full-time, and she served for 43 years as front office receptionist, selling papers and subscriptions. Gladys and Tyler were very active in the Nebraska Press Association and the National Editorial Association and attended many press conventions. They travelled extensively in the United States and around the world with those groups. Gladys and Tyler celebrated their golden wedding in 1963. Tyler died in February, 1972, and Gladys continued as The Signal’s receptionist until her health failed at age 87. She entered Fillmore County Hospital and was a resident of Long Term Care for some time. The past two and one-half years she was a resident of Heritage of Geneva. Gladys was a longtime member of the Geneva United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She belonged to many other civic organizations throughout the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tyler; parents, John and Mary Dingman; a brother, Claude, and his wife, Evelyn, a sister, Airel, and her husband, Homer Whited; and a brother-in-law, Peter Callaghan. Gladys is survived by three daughters and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. K. L. (Arlene) McShane of Cheyenne, Wy., Mr. and Mrs. Fred (Mary) Chandler of Cathedral City, Cal., and Mr. and Mrs. E. J. (Jean) Elam of San Carlos, Cal.; one son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John (Bette) Edgecombe of Geneva; a sister, Lois Callaghan of Lake Mary, Fl.; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Geneva United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 26, with the Rev. Cal Leeds officiating. Musical selection was “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” played by Mrs. Leonard Ackland, organist. Pallbearers were Thomas M. Huddleson, Dean L. Reinsch, Herman L. Larsen, Scott F. Reinsch, Ivan B. Nicholson and Joe E. Schelkopf. Interment was in the Geneva public cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 31 March 1988 page 5.
