Gladys was born on March 9, 1926 in Vermillion to Lester William and Ida May (Brown) Gray. She grew up in Vermillion and graduated from Vermillion High School. Gladys was married to Elmer L. Gladys was born on March 9, 1926 in Vermillion to Lester William and Ida May (Brown) Gray. She grew up in Vermillion and graduated from Vermillion High School. Gladys was married to Elmer L. Rasmussen, Sr. on May 23, 1945 in Meckling, SD. To this union, six children were born, Elmer Jr., David, Michael, Randy, Tim, and Cheri. He passed away on July 23, 2009. They had been married for 64 years. For the past two years, Gladys resided at the Sanford Care Center in Vermillion. Gladys never forgot a family member's birthday or anniversary. A card would arrive on exactly the right day always. This included, of course, her children and spouses, their children and spouses, and great-children. She was always in the know of activities of her grandchildren as well. Although she was unable to attend these activities in her later years, she always acknowledged their ballgames, dance recitals, and other events. Her calendar was always full of their activities. Gladys had many friends near and far. We would be surprised often in our travels when someone would say, "Oh, I know Gladys. She was such a good listener and good friend." Touching lives throughout her twenty-plus years on the USD campus, and with her huge family gatherings by making delicious dinners years after years. She was the heart of the Rasmussen family, gathering all to her home for all of the holidays. She had a strong desire to preserve family history through photographs and written history. Gladys was instrumental in the completion of the Brown Family history tome, along with her daughter, Cheri. Survivors are her six children, JR (Karen) Rasmussen, of Yankton, David (Sandy) Rasmussen of Green Valley, AZ, Michael (Linda) Rasmussen of Vermillion, Randy Rasmussen, Sioux Falls, Tim (Dorothy) Rasmussen, Sioux Falls and Cheri (Mark) Brommer of Yankton; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and 8 step-grandchildren; one brother, Leroy Brown of Wakonda, SD, and one sister, Evelyn Johnson of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer Rasmussen, Sr., one sister, two brothers, and one great-granddaughter. [Courtesy: Kober Funeral Home]
