Description	:	Gladys "Laree" Davis Volsteadt was born February 27, 1921 in Naper, Nebraska to John "Alvin" Davis and Gladys Elnora (Gossard) Davis. She was raised on the Davis family ranch of rural Naper until the family moved to New Mexico due to her mother's failing health. After the death of her mother, they returned to the Davis family ranch. Read More	Gladys "Laree" Davis Volsteadt was born February 27, 1921 in Naper, Nebraska to John "Alvin" Davis and Gladys Elnora (Gossard) Davis. She was raised on the Davis family ranch of rural Naper until the family moved to New Mexico due to her mother's failing health. After the death of her mother, they returned to the Davis family ranch. Her paternal grandmother, Mary Davis, and her paternal uncle and aunt, Albert and Mae Davis, were instrumental in raising Laree and her younger siblings, Leona and Max. She attended rural school and loved learning and helping the other children. When the time came for high school, she joined Grandma Davis who had moved to Butte, Nebraska to give her grandchildren a place to live during their high school years. After graduating from high school and completing Normal Training in 1939, she started her career as an elementary school teacher. She completed her Associate Degree in Education from Wayne State University, Wayne, Nebraska. In the 1960s she started to work on obtaining her bachelor degree. She took her children every summer and attended summer school. Laree received her BS in Elementary Education from Southern State College in Springfield, South Dakota. Her first 10 years were served in rural Nebraska schools. From 1949 to 1953 at Butte Public School and from 1953-1986 in the Bonesteel Public School system. During high school she attended a revival meeting and gave her life to the Lord. In 1953, she met Herman Volsteadt of Bonesteel, South Dakota at church and knew he was "the one". They eloped on July 3rd, 1953 and were married at the Assembly of God Church, in Pierre, South Dakota. They made their home in Bonesteel and to this union two children were born: Kim Loring Volsteadt and Mary Leigh Volsteadt Haan. She was actively involved in her church and community. She was the secretary/treasurer of the local Assembly of God churches for many years where she was a member. Laree taught Sunday School for many years and would assist the church and others in any way she could. Her love for the Lord, showed in everything she said and did. Laree was an avid reader. She enjoyed music, gardening and most importantly her family. Laree participated in Women's Club, PTA, Bonesteel Band Parents Association, and South Dakota Education Association. In 2009, due to failing health, Laree and Herman moved to Touchmark Assisted Living, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After Herman's death she remained at Touchmark and stayed there until she passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014. Laree was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Volsteadt, her parents, Alvin and Gladys Davis, her siblings, Leona Knuteson and Max Davis. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home in Gregory, SD
