She passed away at her home in Cleveland, Ohio sometime during the day Friday, August 8, and was found lying on the living room floor by her husband when he returned from work that evening. She passed away at her home in Cleveland, Ohio sometime during the day Friday, August 8, and was found lying on the living room floor by her husband when he returned from work that evening. The baby was in his play pen in the room where she fell. Gladys Mae Johnston, daughter of David and Geneva Johnston, was born near Mt. Etna, Iowa on June 6, 1919 and she departed this life on August 8, 1947 at the age of 24 years, 2 months, 2 days. Gladys grew to womanhood in Adams County and graduated from the Corning High School in 1937. She graduated from the Boyles Business College, Omaha, Nebraska, and was employed in Omaha at the time she accepted a government position in Washington D. C. in January 1941. In January 1943, she and her sister, Aletha who was also employed in Washington D. C. by the Navy Department. On January 14, 1944, she was united in marriage to Kenneth F. Bickford in Chicago, Illinois. She remained in Cleveland, Illinois, while he was overseas with the Army Air Force and when he returned from the service they established their home there. To this union was born a son, Jimmy Lauren, on July 7, 1946. Gladys was an active member of the Lakewood Baptist Church, Lakewood, Ohio. She and her husband were members of the Oikurol Group of Young married couples of the church. She leaves to mourn her untimely passing, her husband, Kenneth, son Jimmy Lauren, her parents, two brothers, Willard of Des Moines, Marvin of Prescott, five sisters, Alma Livingston of Nova, Ohio, Aletha of Lakewood, Ohio, Eunice Beck of Brightwater, Dailey E. and Vennis V. at home. Wherever Gladys lived she immediately became a part of the community and acquired a host of friends very quickly. She was known by her cheerful dispensation and was always willing to sacrifice her time and self consideration for others. Her untimely passing will be greatly felt in her home community as well as in Cleveland, Oho. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Truman Bowen of Ottumwa, Tuesday afternoon, August 12, in the Corning Baptist Church at 2:30 o’clock. Burial was made in the Mt. Etna Cemetery.
