Description	:	Funeral services for Vonnie Hedinger, age 85 of Corning, who died Saturday, February 16, 2008, at her home will be held Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home in Corning. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7. Interment will be held in the Methodist Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home of Corning. Vonnie Virgene (Johnston) Hedinger was born October 5, 1922, on a farm near Mount Etna, the daughter of David Johnston and Geneva (Westfall) Johnston. She grew up attending rural schools, graduating from the Corning High School with the Class of 1940. She then attended the University of Northern IA in Cedar Falls, graduating with a Normal Teacher Training Certificate in 1947. Vonnie taught in the primary grades in both Corning and Bedford rural schools, staying with various families in the area. During this time, Vonnie spent a great deal of time with her sister Daily. Most people thought they were more like twins than just sisters! Vonnie accepted a position in Corning to teach at the new Craft building, a move that made it possible for her to be near her mother. On December 26, 1955, she was united in marriage to Albert John Hedinger in Mount Etna, Iowa. Vonnie was active in her church teaching Sunday school and Bible School for many years. She attended the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church until its closing, she and Albert then returned to the church she attended as a child, Church of the Brethren, where she was still a member. Vonnie was also a member of the Knitting Club. She was a dedicated, perfectionist seamstress, sewing her own wedding dress and creating over 100 Care Bears! She also loved to raise a large garden, canning the produce and sharing them with her family and friends. Vonnie took great pride in her family and grandchildren. She was known for her many crafts, along with her collection of cookbooks and sewing supplies. Left to cherish Vonnie's memory is a daughter, Kristy Richards and husband Allen of Corning; a son, Jeff Hedinger and wife Becky of Corning; grandsons, Adam and Andrew Hedinger; step-grandchildren, Doug and Missy Richards; Susan and Joe Brown and Curtis Richards; a step-great-grandson, Bryce; two sisters, Daily Allison and husband Darrel; and Eunice Beck; two sister-in-laws, Naomi Johnston and Iola Hedinger; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Preceding Vonnie in death were her parents and in-laws; her husband Albert in 2005; three sisters, Alma Livingston, Aletha Johnston and Gladys Bickford; two brothers, Marvin Johnston and Millard Johnston; four brother-in-laws, Russell Livingston, David Beck, Kenneth Bickford and Russell Hedinger; a sister-in-law, Wilma Johnston; four nephews, Richard Johnston, Duane Johnston, Jimmy Bickford and Gilbert Woodburn; and a niece, Carol Williams. Vonnie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and teacher. Her enthusiasm, humor, insight and gentle kindness will be missed by everyone.
