Description	:	OELWEIN Gladys M. Sharff, 93, of Oelwein, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, in Mercy Living Plus, Oelwein, following a lengthy illness. Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery. Survivors include a brother, Herman W. (wife Jean) Sharff of Oelwein; a sister, Opal M. Galer of Oelwein; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Hugo D. Sharff; a sister, Edith Ostermann; brothers-in-law, Casper Ostermann and Paul Galer; and a sister-in-law, Lillie Sharff. Gladys M. Sharff was born on Nov. 10, 1913, in Lamont, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Ina (Whitney) Sharff. She graduated from Oelwein High School in 1932. After graduation, Gladys was employed at Gunderson Plumbing and Heating. In 1942, she went to California and was employed at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach and later at Western Pipe and Steel shipyards. In the late 40s she ventured to Alaska where she worked for several companies. After returning from Alaska she moved to Washington state where she was employed at General Electric for the atomic research division. Gladys retired and returned to Oelwein to be near her family. She loved to golf, water ski and was an avid bowler all her life. She also enjoyed knitting for her extended family. Gladys was a longtime Oelwein resident and had been a resident of Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein since the fall of 2003. (Obit in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, August, 21, 2007, page 10)
