(Jenkins) Burt on March 17, 1908, at Ohiowa and passed away April 6, 2002, at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 94 years and 20 days. She was the eldest of four children in the family. Gladys grew up in Ohiowa where she enjoyed an especially close relationship with her paternal grandparents, James W. and Emma (McClintock) Burt, and her maternal grandmother, Pauline (Lapcheska) Jenkins. She lived right next door to her Grandma and Grandpa Burt and loved to visit because her grandma was such a wonderful cook, and her grandpa, who was the postmaster in Ohiowa at that time, provided her with so many interesting experiences as a child. One she spoke of often was being allowed to sing in the choir with him at the Baptist Church he attended. It was her Grandpa Burt who chose her name. She also enjoyed a special relationship with her Uncle Charlie Burt’s family and had wonderful memories of visits with her cousins, especially the two closest in age, Thelma (Gewacke) and Faye (Vostrez). She also had an especially close relationship with her Grandma Jenkins that continued until the time of her grandma’s death in 1960 at the age of 89. She graduated from high school in Ohiowa I 1926 and started her working life as a telephone operator and as a clerk in Muir’s Store, both in Ohiowa. She was married to Ora Chaney on August 26, 1927, and to them four children were born. They began their married life on a farm north of Geneva, later moving to Grandpa Chaney’s farm west of town. In the early years, they did all their farming with horses until they bought their first tractor in 1938 (when Dick was 8 years old). That same year, they started a farm implement and repair business called the Chaney Implement co., with Ora’s brother Chet, and she became responsible for selling parts, running the office and keeping the books, along with raising her family. In 1946, she and her family moved from the farm and relocated the business to 9th and F Street in Geneva, where she continued to work until the business was sold sometime in the 1960’s. In the 1970’s, she moved to Lincoln where she and her daughter, Margery, made their home together. During this period in her life, she took a job working at Miller and Paine’s Bake Case, where she enjoyed seeing many old friends from Geneva, and she continued working there until she had passed her 76th birthday. She was a member of the United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was so busy during the years that she was working and raising her family that she had very little time for any outside social interests, preferring instead to spend any free time she had with her family and on a wide range of personal interests, including reading, crocheting, gardening and bird feeding. She had a wide range of reading interests, including biography, Nebraska History, humor, and all kinds of who-done its. She always loved to visit the library and especially enjoyed large type books in recent years, since she began having vision problems. And she always looked forward to reading the daily paper. As a girl, and throughout the years of her marriage, she loved going to dances, especially at Milligan, and even in later years, she continued to love polka music. She shared a special bond with her nephew, Phillip Breitfelder, and her former daughter-in-law, Patricia, who was also born on St. Patrick’s Day. She always looked forward to the special things her family did to observe her birthday every year. Throughout her life, her mind remained active and agile. She was the one the family relied on to keep track of family history. Her memory was excellent, and she kept everyone straight. One of her most appreciated traits was a great sense of humor. She loved the kids in the family and down through the years had observed their antics and enjoyed retelling all the family stories. Although health problems prevented her from spending as much time with her great-grandchildren, she greatly enjoyed the contact she did have with them and loved to hear about their latest adventures. Gladys was preceded in death by her former husband, Ora; her son Richard; son-in-law, Louis Kerl; her parents; sisters Fern Gewacke and Georgia Breitfelder; brother, Ned; nephew Phillip Breitfelder; and niece Vonne Schnell. She is survived by daughters, Ruth A. Kerl; Mary L. Bitterman and husband, Don; Margery O. Chaney; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one niece, Connie Gonyea. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva, on Friday, April 12, 2002, with Rev. Brian Kottas officiating. Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied the congregation who sang, “The Old Rugged Cross” Special vocal solos of “How Great Thou Art”, “I come to the Garden Alone” and “May the Lord Rise to Meet you” were provided by Malley Keelan. Casket bearers were Robert Bitterman, Michael Chaney, Brett Chaney, Doug Chaney, Jerrod Chaney and Barry Chaney. Honorary bearers were Drew Chaney, Mark Kerl, Leland Maxam and Ted Timmermans. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal April 17th, 2002 page 9.
