LOCKWOOD, 85, of 13553 Macy-Millark Road, Macy, died Tuesday at 12:59 p.m. at Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth. Glen was born March 28, 1924, in Valley Falls, Kan., to Dennis Delbert and Grace Forbes Lockwood, both of whom preceded him in death. He was married Nov. 6, 1951, in Cheyenne, Wyo., to Opal Irene Lewis Halterman, who preceded him in death in 1992. Glen was a heavy equipment operator for NIPSCO and retired in 1983 following 30 years of dedicated service. Glen served in the Civilian Conservation Corps until it was dissolved in 1942. As a patriot, our country beckoned him for service. He joined the U.S. Army on Jan. 8, 1943. His tour of duty included the Rhineland battle and campaign in France; at this time he was awarded a Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal. His other decorations included a European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, an American Theater Campaign Ribbon, one Overseas Bar, the Victory Ribbon and an Army of Occupation of Germany Ribbon. On Feb. 5, 1946, he was honorably discharged. Over the years, Glen enjoyed travels from coast to coast seeing sights across America. One of his favorite destinations was Excelsior Springs, Mo., where his family lived. Glen had a passion for cars. He loved struttin' his stuff by cruising, always in a late model car. Gramps is remembered for his distinct and twinkling "Pea-green eyes!" The grandkids will always remember Gramps Glen proclaiming, "I'm Underdog, and I came to save the day!" When learning to drive there was no better teacher than Gramps. To relax Glen loved the racing scene; whether it was NASCAR or Indy Car, he was glued to the TV. Watching the old Westerns was also a delight. Cheering for the Indianapolis Colts was his idea of a perfect Sunday afternoon. Glen's favorite hangouts were the Evergreen Cafe and the Paradise Truck Stop Restaurant. It was a daily ritual that he would meet his coffee buddies and hang out. While drinking the brew, they would solve the world's problems. It was these locales where friendships evolved into friends for life. The guys would affirm that Glen was second to none in the storytelling department. He was the inventor of convincing tall tales. Glen will be missed by his loving family, his loyal pals at the coffee table and the many friends he made along life's journey to cherish his memory. Survivors include three sons, Willis D. Halterman and wife Clymenia, Rochester, Lewis Halterman and wife Shirley, Peru, Ind., and Lessel "Les" L. Halterman and wife Donna, Macy; eight grandchildren, Brenda Holmes and husband Rodney, Rochester, Angela Condon and husband Shawn, Rochester, Bob Halterman and wife Sherry, Macy, Susie Griffith, Disco, Gary Halterman and wife Loretta, Chili, Ind., Crystal Noakes and husband Tim, Logansport, Steve Halterman, Marion, and David Halterman and wife Lisa, Macy, two sisters, Maxine Fogle and Alene Clevenger, both of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; and one brother, Jewell Dean Ware and wife Carol, Warsaw, Mo. Preceding Mr. Lockwood in death are his parents, one grandson, two granddaughters and one daughter-in-law.
