Glenn's brother, Paul, 21, who was in the crash, left the Ellensburg hospital Monday afternoon, his injuries being confined to cuts and bruises, and he also suffered greatly from shock. The accident occurred shortly before 1 o'clock Saturday when the two Hughes brothers, who resided with their father, Levi Hughes on a farm near the municipal wells, were driving west. Engineer H. D. Wolter of the passenger train and J. B. Calkins, conductor, assert that the whistle was blown but that apparently it was not heard. Evidently Glenn, who was at the wheel and who owned the car, saw the on-rushing train at the last moment for he swerved sharply to the right as he reached the track and the locomotive struck the car near the left rear wheel. The automobile was knocked 20 feet by the crash and is almost a total wreck. Both the boys were thrown out into the snow and when they were picked up, Paul, the younger, was holding his brother's head in his lap. Both were put into the baggage car and Engineer Wolter attempted to start up and hurry the injured to Ellensburg. It was discovered the cowcatcher of the locomotive had been damaged and was dragging. It had to be chained up and when that was accomplished, it was found that Glenn had died, although the job had taken but a few minutes. Another driver, unknown, drove across the tracks just ahead of the Hughes brothers and witnesses say he had a narrow escape. Glenn Hughes was born in Kansas, June 20, 1901 and had resided in the Kittitas Valley for nine years. He is survived by four brothers and seven sisters: Alfred, Will, Paul, and Frank of Ellensburg; Mrs. Gerald Lamphrey, Mrs. F. G. Carpenter, Mrs. A. D. Taylor and Mrs. Otis Desvoigne, all of Ellensburg; Mrs. W. T. Johnson of Seattle; Mrs. Sam Leathers, Winlock, and Mrs. Clark Wheeler, Toppenish. His father, Levi Hughes, resides on a farm six miles west of Ellensburg. The Ellenburg Capital, January 6, 1927
