He is survived by one daughter, Kay Keller, of Grand Prairie, Texas; one niece, Emma Ogden of Salida; and one nephew Charles Friend of Penrose. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Edith; one brother, Ray Squire; and three sisters, Eunice Hoffman, Cala Sanders, and Nellie Friend. Graveside services will be at 11 am Tuesday , April 24, 2007 at Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Canon City, with Buck Friend officiating. Arrangements were handled through Hold Family Funeral Home. This second obituary is courtesy Cheryl Smith, a niece of Glenn's. It came mostly from the Comanche County history book and was written by Glenn's sisters, Eunice Hoffman and Calla Sanders. This from Cheryl Smith BIOGRAPHY OF GLENN SQUIRE Glenn Richard Squire, son of Richard Austin and Lura May (Welch) Squire was born in Attica, Kansas, December 1, 1915. Glenn was the youngest child with 3 older sisters and one older brother. Richard Squire thought a farm would be a better life for his children, so he moved his family to a farm near Coy, Oklahoma, in 1917, Glenn was about 18 months old at that time. Glenn would spend the next eight years in this area. Glenn fondly remembers the McKinley Ranch, a large ranch where his first school was located. Glenn was always a builder and inventor of wooden toys and other articles. He enjoyed hunting and was a good marksman. The only school in Oklahoma consisted of a house in the middle of a pasture with only a trail for access. To attend school Glenn and his siblings walked a couple of miles every day, each day an adventure, sister Calla wrote. As there were no cars nor roads for cars, coal for heating the school arrived by wagon pulled by a team of horses. Sunday services were held in the Squire Family home, for the neighborhood lacked a church. Sister Nellie played the violin, sisters Calla and Eunice both played the piano. Young Glenn also had a marvelous singing voice, though he was timid about his own talents. Calla, Eunice, and Nellie all had some sort of instrumental training, but Glenn always played by ear without benefit of formal training. When the family moved to Comanche County, in 1924, Glenn attended the New Home and Missouri Valley schools. His highest level of education was the 8th grade, most common for those times. He loved to play his guitar and invented a device to hold his French harp so his hands were free to accompany himself on the guitar when he could not get sister Calla Sanders to do so. In 1942, Glenn enlisted in the Navy, spending thirty months overseas. After basic training at the Great Lakes, he was sent to Purdue University for electronics training. After passing all his classes, he was assigned to the destroyer escort, "Lee Hardy", and sent to the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged as Electricians Mate First Class, after 3 years of service. 2 From 1945 to 1947, Glenn farmed with his dad, and was also employed by the County Road Patrol. On May 25, 1947, 32 year old Glenn married Jayne LaDelle Ogden of Coldwater. This double wedding ceremony was held in Coldwater, Kansas, with Jane's brother Jack Ogden marrying Emma Friend, Emma being a niece of Glenn's. After a short honeymoon, Glenn and Jayne made their home in Coldwater. A daughter, Kaye Arleen was born March 8, 1948, at Dodge City, Kansas. Not long after Kaye was born, destiny was unkind to Glenn. Jayne asked for a divorce, left for Wichita with her mother and her sisters, taking toddler Kaye Arleen with her. Kaye's life would not intermingle with Glenn's from that time forward. Fortunately for Glenn, his occupation as an electrical engineer would take him across the United States and Canada. The pipeline located at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, was one of the oil refineries that needed Glenn's area of expertise. He built power plants in Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado just to name a few. Proudly Glenn received his fifty year pin from IBEW- International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in the late 1990's. On February 1, 1952, at Taos, New Mexico, Glenn married Edythe Pratt from Oklahoma City. Glenn and Edythe had been married for thirty-five years when Edythe died on December 27, 1987, having been an invalid for a number of years. Glenn dearly loved Edythe and took excellent care of her. Glenn and Edyth resided in Canon City for a number of years. Glenn's last work was on the Pueblo Dam near Pueblo, Colorado. Glenn retired in ? due to health reasons. Glenn entertains his family with funny stories. Sister Nellie was 14 years older than Glenn. When the school teacher was not available, sister Nellie was appointed teacher. Glenn did not like his sister as a teacher. She had no sense of humor and was very strict. The Friends and Hagens from the Coy area also attended that school. 3 Glenn's brother Ray also served in World War II. As an U. S. Army infantryman, Ray hit Omaha Beach with gun in hand. Ray survived landing on Omaha Beach, but as the patrol moved inland towards Belgium, Ray received his first Purple Heart decoration. Each time Ray was shot, the military would notify Glenn, then aboard a naval ship. Glenn would not leave the service when asked, saying his parents would not approve, even though both Squire men could be killed in action. Ray was awarded three Purple Heart Medals for his wartime injuries, the shrapnel forever embedded in his body. Glenn remembers his mother filling a large kettle with water and ears of corn in the fall of the year. She would cook this corn all day long to make hominy. The water well was about a half mile away and had to be hauled by mule back to the house. Nothing was easy in those days. Many years ago, Glenn gave his great-nephew Richard Friend a special rifle. This rifle had been taken from a Japanese soldier. The soldier's name had been written in Japanese, on the sling. In recalling his war days, Glenn said sometimes there would be 100 ships in a convoy. When the US started the Philippines Island campaign, it was nothing to see at least 100 ships in the harbor- hospital ships, freighters, destroyers, and tin cans-all bound for the South Pacific theatre. Glenn's daughter Kaye (Eugene) Keller now lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Granddaughters are Dayle (Herald) Durham of Dallas Texas, Shellie Keller of Dallas, Texas, Shannon (Herb) Elwood of Las Vegas, NE, and Heather Keller of Twin Falls, Idaho. Glenn has 6 great grandchildren. On April 18, 2007, following a short illness, Glenn quietly died in the Canon City Nursing Home. He was 91 and a half years old. As requested, Glenn was buried next to his wife Edythe at Mtn. Vale Cemetery in Canon City, Colorado.
